A black cat with a huge social media following has made history by becoming the first ever pet to be mayor of a town called Hell.
Jinx the cat has attracted a huge following on social media due to the issues that she was born with - huge eyes and oversized feet and has been with owner Mia since 2018.
The popular cat was given the keys to govern Hell, Michigan, in the US, on Sunday April 24 at 4pm (9pm UK time).
Hell is a township that is located 20 miles northwest of Ann Arbor with a population of around 72 people.
The town offers anyone the chance to become "mayor of Hell" for the day or even just for an hour.
You can sign up on the website and request a slot for your time as mayor – and you’ll even be impeached when your term ends.
However Jinx will be the most popular mayor for the town as she has 736,000 followers on TikTok, 402,000 on Instagram and 248,000 on Twitter.
Owner Mia and pet Jinx live in California.
Mia rescued her when she was just three weeks old after finding the now-famous cat in a field behind her house.
Throughout the years she noticed that the cat's eyes were getting bigger.
Along with her eyes getting bigger Jinx also developed large feet which meant she could no longer walk properly.
With these issues Mia posted pictures and videos of her unique pet on social media and that led to a huge interest in Jinx.
This rapid rise to fame has led to several of Jinx’s TikTok videos getting millions of views, and even a line of soft toys bearing Jinx’s likeness.
On April 8, Mia asked if her popular furry friend could ever be mayor anywhere in the country.
Surprisingly the people of Hell got in touch informing her of their very unique opportunity.
On Thursday Mia told her Twitch followers that "Jinx is going to be mayor in three days".
This promoted a response from Jinx's fans that he should be rewarded with salami and cat treats.
Jinx is Hell’s first cat to be name mayor, but joins a long line of feline mayors worldwide – including Stubbs, a cat who was mayor of Talkeetna in Alaska from 1998 until his death in 2017.
Some towns don’t limit their mayors to only humans and cats – Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, has elected a long line of dogs as mayor since 1998 including the incumbent, a French bulldog name Wilbur.
And it doesn’t stop there. According to local press at the time, a deodorising foot powder called Pulvapies was elected mayor of the town of Picoazá, Ecuador in 1967.
Jinx’s official proclamation as mayor was transmitted via the cat’s Twitch page and viewed by hundreds of thousands of people on social media.
However, as per tradition, Jinx was impeached shortly afterwards.
