KURUKSHETRA: Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Charuni has written a letter to Union agriculture and farmers' welfare minister Narendra Singh Tomar, and demanded from him to start the paddy procurement this year from September 15 instead of October 1.
BKU said as per the paddy procurement policy of the Centre government, the procurement started on October 1, which is now considered very late in Haryana and Punjab.
"When rules were framed for starting procurement from October 1, that country seed (of paddy) was cultivated which took more time to ripe and the crop came to the grain market in October. That seed took 100 to 120 days to ripen. But in today's time, most farmers are cultivating hybrid seed, which has a crop cycle of 85 to 90 days. This crop now gets ready in 80 to 90 days and starts to arrive at the grain market in the second week of September", wrote BKU Charuni in their letter.
