BJP submits reports on Pahadi Korwa family suicide in Chhattisgarh, urges governor for high-level inquiry

RAIPUR: Senior leaders of opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chhattisgarh on Monday met with Governor Bishwabhushan Harichandan urging him to order the authorities concerned for a high level inquiry/action into the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) Pahari Korwa family suicide in Jashpur district.

The letter, carrying signature of BJP state president Arun Sao, former chief minister and BJP national vice president Raman Singh and leader of opposition Narayan Chandel, was handed over to the Governor along with the reports of the party’s fact-finding team on Pahadi Korwa family suicide case.

The letter reads that the heart-wrenching incident of suicide by the couple along with their two kids, aged three years and one and a half years, at Jhumridumar village of Samarbar panchayat, Bagicha development block, Jashpur, has exposed state government’s policy for poor.

A six-member fact-finding panel of the BJP had on April seven visited the village and collected startling facts, including starvation and unemployment, which led the couple to hang their two kids first and then they hanged themselves from a tree in front of their kutcha house on April two.

The state government was yet to reveal the reasons behind the suicide. “We have attached the copy of our findings of an independent investigation carried out by our team. We urge you to order the authorities concerned for a high level inquiry/action into the case,” reads the letter to the Governor.

Meanwhile, opposition BJP and the ruling Congress have engaged in ward of words over the suicide. While the BJP fact-finding team claimed that starvation and unemployment forced the couple to commit suicide along with their two kids, Congress said that disputes in the family were the reasons.

Rajuram Korwa, 30, his wife Bhinsari Bai, 25, and their children, aged four and one, were found hanging from a tree in front of their house. Police suspect the couple killed their children and then hanged themselves. Pahadi Korwa is a PVTG that is adopted by the President of India.
