Ruling BJP councillors and Opposition Congress members clashed in the Palakkad municipality here on Tuesday during a discussion on a resolution against the State government’s SilverLine project.
Although the Opposition supported the anti-SilverLine resolution moved by BJP member N. Sivarajan, the discussion turned into a pandemonium when a Congress member raised the issue of petroleum fuel hike.
The Opposition members lost their patience when Mr. Sivarajan said fuel prices would be increased further and those who found it unbearable could go to Pakistan.
During a noisy turmoil, the councillors pushed each other and called each other names. Although the meeting was adjourned, the tension continued for some more time.
Although the meeting resumed after a while, the Congress members insisted that their BJP counterparts should apologise for abusing them. However, municipal chairperson Priya Ajayan said the members were supposed to have addressed the chair, and not each other.
The Congress members staged a walkout when Ms. Ajayan refused to reprimand the BJP members.
