Bizarre Dumbarton sighting of 'alpacas on the loose' sends Twitter wild

Stray alpacas on the loose is not something you expect to see on a Saturday evening in Dumbarton.

But that's exactly what locals were faced with this weekend, when bewildered residents spotted the unusual sight on Saturday afternoon.

Twitter user crossy72_ took to the social media site to share the bizarre picture of the four-legged pals along with the caption: “There’s alpacas on the loose in Dumbarton.”

The two images show a total of three animals strutting about the street in broad daylight.

The post was liked a total of 11.7k times and shared by over 900 people, with users guessing how the pack came to be roaming free on the streets of Dumbarton.

But the real headscratcher was whether the creatures were indeed alpacas at all - with users sounding off in the comments to try and correctly identify the animals.

One follower replied: “Alpaca’s ears are shaped like an uppercase A, whilst llamas are shaped like a lower case.”

A second said: "Good spot, they're llamas though. Hopefully they got home OK."

Another joked: “This real? Or alpaca lies.”

To be fair, alpacas are the spitting image of llamas so it's no wonder there is so much confusion.

What do you think, Glasgow - can you work out whether these are llamas or alpacas? Answers on a postcard - or Facebook and Twitter will do.
