The Russian returned to the ring six months after halting Canelo Alvarez’s rise through the divisions in a huge upset, providing his first defeat for nine years on an unforgettable occasion. Now another feared Mexican has been tamed in the form of Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez.
Bivol put his WBA light-heavyweight belt on the line once again at Etihad Arena, maintaining his undefeated record and inflicting the first loss of former super-middleweight champion Zurdo’s career. A rematch with Canelo could now be on the cards in 2023, while the boxing world will eagerly await a mouthwatering showdown for all the belts at 175lbs against formidable compatriot Artur Beterbiev.
There was also a stacked undercard on Saturday, with Chantelle Cameron becoming the UK’s first women’s undisputed champion. Zelfa Barrett lost in his battle for the vacant IBF super-featherweight crown, while there were wins for brothers Galal and Kal Yafai and young Campbell Hatton.
