Bitcoin whales add 113,950 BTC USD worth $9.6 billion in 10 weeks - is this crypto rally being fueled by big buyers?

Bitcoin’s rise has been accompanied by heavy accumulation among some of its largest wallet groups, but the numbers do not necessarily tell the full story.

Wallets with holdings between 100 and 1,000 BTC have accumulated 113,950 BTC since July 15, as per analytics firm Santiment. With Bitcoin’s price at $84,388, the accumulation is valued at $9.6 billion.

Bitcoin (BTC USD) Whales Keep Adding to Their Holdings

The same group increased its Bitcoin holdings by about 2.2%, bringing its combined balance to roughly 5.2 million BTC, worth around $440 billion, as per a 24/7 Wall St report.

Santiment says this wallet group has generally tracked Bitcoin’s price movements more accurately than any other wallet tier over the past five years.

The accumulation continued as Bitcoin moved higher. The cryptocurrency was around $58,500 at the end of June before climbing into the high $70,000s in August and moving above $85,000 on September 21.

When holders sell during a rally, their wallet balance falls. A rising balance, on the other hand, indicates that the holders are continuing to accumulate or maintain their positions.

Whale Wallets Do Not Always Represent Individual Buyers

There is an important limitation when interpreting these figures.

A Bitcoin wallet does not necessarily belong to one individual investor. One investor can spread holdings across several addresses, while a single address can also hold Bitcoin on behalf of thousands of customers.

The 100-to-1,000 BTC category includes private buyers, exchange cold wallets, custodians, OTC trading desks and funds storing Bitcoin.

Transfers between wallets belonging to the same fund or custodian can therefore increase the balance of this wallet group without representing new purchases.

The same applies to Bitcoin held on exchanges. A 500 BTC purchase that remains on an exchange would not appear in the whale statistics. Meanwhile, a 500 BTC transfer from one personal wallet to another could potentially be interpreted as new demand even though no new purchase occurred.

Bitcoin ETF Inflows Add Another Piece to the Picture

Spot Bitcoin ETFs also recorded significant inflows during the period.

The ETFs saw about $999 million in inflows on September 21 and another $715 million on September 22, bringing the two-day total to roughly $1.7 billion.

The whale group’s roughly $9.6 billion accumulation, meanwhile, took place over about ten weeks.

The broader market backdrop also changed during this period, the VIX closed at 14.2 on September 22, compared with 20.7 on July 29, suggesting that buyers were entering as overall market fear eased.

Whale Accumulation Does Not Prove Who Is Behind the Rally

The whale data shows continued accumulation, but it cannot conclusively establish that “smart money” is behind Bitcoin’s rally.

ETF flows offer a clearer picture of institutional interest. If ETF buying continues in the hundreds of millions of dollars each day, that would provide further evidence for institutional involvement.

But if ETFs record a week of outflows, it could indicate that buyers supporting the rally have pulled back, regardless of what whale wallets are doing.

For now, the data shows that large Bitcoin wallets have continued accumulating as the cryptocurrency moved higher. The bigger question is whether that accumulation represents fresh demand or activity within wallets and institutions already holding Bitcoin.
