Bissouma energy, future stars - 5 things spotted in Ange Postecoglou's first Tottenham training

Returning players

The first day of pre-season training at Hotspur Way saw a couple of familiar faces return to the club's Enfield base for the first time in almost a year. Tanguy Ndombele was one of those after spending the past 12 months on loan at Napoli, who he helped achieve the Scudetto with for only the third time in their history.

Sergio Reguilon was another one of the players to also return after a year away following his time back in his home country with Atletico Madrid. Bryan Gil also spent a spell in Spain during the 2022/23 season after linking up with former club Sevilla for the second part of the campaign, with Djed Spence another to depart in January after his loan move to French team Rennes.

Although they may not have been in Antonio Conte's plans when they were given the green light to depart, the quartet could potentially come into Postecoglou's thinking for the new season. Key to that will be catching the Australian's eye in pre-season and taking their opportunity when it comes their way in the friendly games.

Bissouma raring to go

One player who will be determined to wow Postecoglou in pre-season is Yves Bissouma. The midfielder missed three months of last season through injury and his football prior to that was also limited with Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ahead of him in the pecking order.

Showcasing just what he can bring to the Tottenham team in the final three games of last campaign, Bissouma will be intent on starting from where he left off and becoming an integral part of Postecoglou's starting XI. The Mali international certainly looks raring to go if the footage from the player arrivals on Tottenham's social media accounts is anything to go by.

Having a huge smile on his face as he got out of his car, the 26-year-old was clearly in good spirits and could be seen saying 'we're back' to the camera a number of times before heading inside. Plenty of Tottenham fans noted the player's energy and all will be praying he goes on to excel on the pitch and replicate the form he displayed at Brighton.

Bentancur putting in the work

On the subject of Tottenham midfielders, Bentancur was also back at Hotspur Way and putting in the hard work ahead of the new season. The Uruguayan was greeted in the car park by Reguilon and Pedro Porro and shared a quick embrace with the pair after reuniting.

Decked out in the club's new training wear, Bentancur could be seen working on an exercise bike as he bids to get back to full fitness after his 2022/23 campaign was cut short through injury. In an interview just over a week ago, the ex-Juventus man stated that he hopes to be playing again for Tottenham in "two or three months".

New backroom team together for the first time

The appointment of Postecoglou at the helm means that the Tottenham players will be working with some new coaching staff over the course of the 2023/24 season and beyond. Although a couple of familiar faces in Ryan Mason and Matt Wells remain in N17 after taking on assistant coach roles under Postecoglou, two new coaches have joined the backroom team.

One of those is Chris Davies, who previously worked under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City, Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester, and he has been joined at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by former player Mile Jedinak. In the training photos released by the club, Postecoglou could be seen chatting on the training pitch with Davies and Wells and another showed Jedinak sharing a moment with Ndombele.

All working together for the very first time on Saturday, the new coaching dynamic at Tottenham could prove to be a real hit with Postecoglou having a nice blend of youth and experience alongside him.

Youngsters involved

A handful of youngsters also had the opportunity to show the new head coach what they're all about as he gets his plans in place for the upcoming campaign. Troy Parrott and Dane Scarlett, following their loan spells with Preston North End and Portsmouth respectively, could be seen at Hotspur Way as the team started in the gym before heading outside.

In a video uploaded on the club's Twitter account on Sunday afternoon, the players were back on the grass and with a ball already at their feet as they played a possession-based game. Other youngsters involved included Matthew Craig, who has just penned a new contract at the club, Harvey White and Alfie Devine.

As the rest of the first-team squad will be back at different times due to their international football commitments this summer, the aforementioned youngsters will have plenty of time to impress Postecoglou. Minutes could then potentially come their way in pre-season, thus giving them the perfect opportunity to play their way into the manager's thinking.
