Police have arrested a suspect after three people were stabbed as they tried to prevent a phone robbery in the City of London.

Witnesses said two knife-wielding robbers on electric bikes were challenged by brave passersby after they tried to snatch a mobile phone on Bishopsgate just before 10am on Thursday.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in Islington on Monday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery, grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody.

In footage posted online, horrified commuters watched on as people were attacked close to Liverpool Street Station.

In shocking footage of the triple stabbing, the two suspects pass a blade between each other as they take turns landing blows on heroic Londoners fighting back.

The taller suspect appears to be handed a blade by his accomplice as he is dragged to the ground by a member of the public.

A woman in a floral dress is also shown pushing the attacker in the back before checking her arm after she is swung at.

The City of London Police said the three victims did not suffer life-changing injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

The force added they received reports of three stabbings and a person pushed to the floor on Bishopsgate at 9.46am with officers arriving at the scene by 9.51am.

DCI Colin Bishop, of the City of London Police Major Crime Team, said: “Detectives who are investigating a number of serious offences connected with the attempted robbery and knife attack on Bishopsgate last Thursday have arrested a 25-year-old man in Islington this morning (Monday 10 October 2022).

“He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery, grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

“He remains in police custody.”

Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses with information to assist with the investigation. Anyone with information about the incident should use the Major Incident Public Portal or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
