Bosses at Bristol Waste have apologised after tens of thousands of homes in the city did not have their bins or recycling collected. The troubled council-owned company blamed staff shortages for missing collections at a total of 620 streets or tower block bin stores, with recycling collections worst hit.
The missed streets were right across Bristol, with south Bristol badly affected. Streets across Whitchurch, Hengrove, Brislington, Totterdown, Knowle, Knowle West and Bedminster that usually have their recycling picked up on a Tuesday morning didn’t - with Bristol Waste advising people to leave it outside for another day.

Streets in east Bristol were also badly affected, with scores of roads in St George, Redfield and Lawrence Hill missed by the collection teams. In total, more than 510 streets were missed by recycling teams.
Around 95 streets, mainly in the Totterdown, Arnos Vale, St Anne’s, Brislington, Crews Hole and St George areas, that were due a fortnightly refuse collection, were not visited by the missing crews.
A spokesperson for Bristol Waste apologised for the high number of missed roads - one of the highest on record. “We're sorry to report that due to staff shortages, we were unable to collect refuse & recycling from a high number of roads today (Tuesday),” the company said last night.
“Please leave your bins and boxes out and we’ll return to collect them tomorrow,” she added, before urging people to check their streets weren’t on the lengthy list on the council’s website, and if it wasn’t listed, to report their missing collection.
