Renowned American actor Billy Porter and celebrated South African television presenter Bonang Matheba have been selected to co-host the fourth annual Earthshot Prize Awards in South Africa on November 6. The Earthshot Prize, an environmental initiative founded by Prince William in 2020, aims to provide sustainable solutions to global challenges.
Expressing his excitement, Porter stated, 'I'm honored to co-host the evening and celebrate creativity, human ingenuity, and artistry within the Earthshot community.' Matheba also shared her enthusiasm, saying, 'I am thrilled to acknowledge the remarkable innovators making a positive impact on our planet.'
The star-studded event, scheduled to be held in Cape Town, will feature special performances by artists such as Davido, Diamond Platnumz, Lebo M, the Ndlovu Youth Choir, and Uncle Waffles. The 15 Earthshot Prize finalists represent diverse regions, with countries like France, Ghana, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Nepal competing for the prestigious award.
The winners, to be chosen by the Prince of Wales and a panel of experts including José Andrés, Queen Rania of Jordan, and David Attenborough, will each receive a £1 million prize to further develop their solutions. Since its inception, the Earthshot Prize has provided over £75 million in funding and support to environmental projects worldwide.
The competition is divided into five categories: 'Protect and Restore Nature,' 'Clean Our Air,' 'Revive Our Oceans,' 'Build a Waste Free World,' and 'Fix Our Climate.' Notable personalities like Heidi Klum, Nina Dobrev, Winnie Harlow, and Tobe Nwigwe will announce the winners in each category.
In addition to recognizing global environmental efforts, the ceremony aims to showcase innovation from Africa. The event will be broadcast globally through a partnership with YouTube, as part of Earthshot Week from November 4 to 7, culminating in the Earthshot Prize Awards on November 6.
