Billy Gilmour sees Brighton position made clear as Roberto De Zerbi giddy about Scotland standout

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi has given two clear reasons why Scotland star Billy Gilmour isn't first pick for the Seagulls.

Gilmour made the £9million move to the south coast from Chelsea this summer in the hope of linking up with then boss Graham Potter and getting much needed game time. However things took a rapid twist with Potter moving the other way to take up the Stamford Bridge hot seat less than a week later.

And now the 21-year-old has become a bit part player under De Zerbi with Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister the Italian's preferred options in midfield. In the most recent game against Manchester City, Gilmour was given just three minutes game time off the bench. While he was an unused substitute in the two previous games which has led to the Seagulls boss to address Gilmour's position in the side.

"I really like Gilmour, I think he can improve a lot with us," said De Zerbi. "But Caicedo and Mac Allister are two big players for us. He has to find the space to play and I have to give him more space but it is difficult.

"We do not have Europa or Champions League, we have one game per week but there are many good young players. I am speaking Gilmour, Sarmiento and Lamptey. Lamptey played part of the game very well.”

Gilmour will be hoping to feature as Brighton host his former club Chelsea next Saturday in the English Premier League.
