Bills Release Multiple Veterans As Cap Casualties Ahead of Free Agency

The Buffalo Bills released several key players on Wednesday, allowing the team to clear cap space ahead of free agency. Among the players the Bills cut are center Mitch Morse, safety Jordan Poyer and reportedly cornerback Tre’Davious White.

Morse signed with the Bills before the 2019 NFL season and was a staple on the team’s offensive line, playing in 77 games over five seasons and making one Pro Bowl in 2022. The veteran had one year left on his deal but will still cost $3 million against the cap this year.

Poyer has been in the league since 2013 but broke out as a starter after signing with Buffalo in 2017. Poyer, who also had one year left on his contract, recorded 22 interceptions and 11 sacks in 107 games, making one Pro Bowl and one All-Pro team. He will still cost $2 million against the Bills’ cap in 2024.

White, the Bills’ first-round pick in 2017, made three All-Pro teams and two Pro Bowls in Buffalo. The veteran had two years left on his contract, but he hasn’t been officially released yet as the Bills will designate him as a post-June 1 cut, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Buffalo will gain $10.2 million in cap space once the transaction goes through instead of just $6 million now.

Buffalo also released defensive back Siran Neal, wide receiver Deonte Harty and running back Nyheim Hines as part of the purge.

The Bills also reportedly restructured pass rusher Von Miller’s contract, saving the team an additional $8.65 million in salary cap space, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

The Bills were set to enter the offseason over the salary cap by a league-worst $41.3 million, meaning they needed to make some moves to give them some flexibility. After cutting players and agreeing to a new deal with Miller, the Bills are about $7.4 million over the cap, according to Spotrac, which is more reasonable as NFL free agency begins next week.
