Billionaire Mark Cuban Takes on a New Challenge

Mark Cuban is a very busy man.

The tech billionaire is known for being the owner of the Dallas Mavericks franchise, which harbors big ambitions to win the NBA title this season after acquiring controversial star Kyrie Irving to create a duo with superstar Luka Doncic.

The NBA is entering an important phase that will determine the teams going to the playoffs with the chance to be crowned next May.

Cuban also remains busy with the hit show "Shark Tank," of which he is one of the stars. The most surprising thing is that the serial entrepreneur is involved in a multitude of companies ranging from healthcare to digital assets and Blockchain technology.

Cuban Promotes DMDB

Since January 2022, Cuban, who became a billionaire in 1995 after he and his friend Todd Wagner sold Broadcast.com -- audio streaming over the internet -- to Yahoo! for $5.6 billion, has been disrupting the powerful pharmaceutical industry.

He is determined to lower the prices of drugs whose bills can often bankrupt millions of Americans. He co-founded an online pharmacy, which is called Mark Cuban CostPlus Drug Company. This platform offers drug prices, mainly generics, at affordable prices for millions of patients mainly because Cuban has eliminated the middlemen.

The task promises to be herculean because if there is an economic sector which has escaped disruption for years, it is that of the distribution of drugs. Billionaires Jeff Bezos with Amazon (AMZN), Warren Buffett with Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) and Jamie Dimon with JPMorgan Chase tried their luck by joining forces but they gave up last year. Their failure is proof if need be that Cuban is engaged in an unequal battle that equates the fight between David and Goliath.

The billionaire put extra pressure on himself by giving his name to this online pharmacy. It is the only company or venture in which he is involved that bears his name. Given the stakes, one would expect him to devote all his energy and every second of his time to it.

But Cuban is part of the caste of these serial entrepreneurs and investors who can juggle between several companies. It is in this perspective that a new venture that he is promoting on Twitter must be understood. On his account, the billionaire encourages creators, artists and influencers to visit the DMDB.com site, a new digital database.

"If you're involved in the content industry, as a creator, contributor, editor, hair/make up, in front of the camera or behind the scenes and you feel like your name should be in the credits or if you just love great content, go to http://DMDB.COM right now," the 'Shark Tank' star posted on Feb. 20.

Not Sure How Involved Is Cuban

Is it a new company and one of its new ventures, hard to say. Cuban did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TheStreet.

DMDB also did not respond to a request for comment.

The acronym stands for Digital Media Database, according to its website. The information available comes from the members.

"Members are people in the media industry, such as filmmakers, producers, directors, actors, set, art and costume designers; those involved in representing talent, such as agents and legal counsel; and fans who appreciate the effort of everyone involved in the creation of digital media," the platform said.

Users can thus consult information on a movie, a non-fungible token (NFT), an app, a viral video, a commercial, a video clip or a TV show or program.

To earn money, DMDB offers a subscription. Users can create an account for free but this one, which is called White badges signify Standard Membership, is limited. There is another paid plan, Green badges means Gateway Membership.

"By upgrading you gain access to create a watch list, leave ratings and reviews, contribute information to the site, as well as enjoy many other site features and privileges," DMDB says.

DMDB arrives in a sector where there is already Wikipedia and IMDB (Internet Movie Database) in particular. But the platform's main rival is genuinely IMDB. The big difference is that DMDB seems to take into account tech, music, advertising, the influencer/creator economy. The platform thus adapts to the new economy.

"We have IMDB for that," a Twitter user tweeted at Cuban.

"Compare the two and post what you think," the billionaire responded.

However, DMDB still encounters technical problems, which they did not hesitate to point out.

"Sorry.. A bit more traffic than expected !" Cuban apologized.
