A tragic incident occurred in India's western city of Mumbai during heavy rain and thunderstorms, resulting in the collapse of a large billboard onto unsuspecting individuals. Reports indicate that at least 14 people lost their lives, while 74 others sustained injuries in the unfortunate event.
Following the incident, a rescue operation was promptly initiated on Tuesday morning to assist those affected. The extent of the damage caused by the fallen billboard has left authorities uncertain about the number of individuals who may still be trapped beneath the debris.
The calamity unfolded as heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, caused the 30-meter-tall (100-foot-tall) billboard to topple over a gas station in the suburb of Ghatkopar on Monday evening. Despite the challenging conditions, rescue efforts continued late into the night, resulting in the successful extraction of 47 individuals from the site.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, revealing that the billboard was unlawfully installed. According to officials, 31 of the injured individuals have already been discharged from the hospital after receiving necessary medical attention.
India experiences intense rainfall and severe flooding during the monsoon season, which typically spans from June to September and accounts for a significant portion of the country's annual precipitation. While the rain is vital for agricultural activities, it often leads to widespread damage and poses risks to public safety.
