The 390-foot (119-metre) hydrogen-powered Breakthrough, originally commissioned for Bill Gates before being sold to Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, reportedly sparked online complaints after an onboard party disturbed residents of a quiet Italian village. Anchored off Scaglieri Beach on Elba Island in late July, music from the gathering was said to have carried across the bay, prompting criticism on social media. Although authorities reported no fines or official investigation, the incident drew attention because one of the world's quietest yachts made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Why Bill Gates' superyacht was built for silence
Breakthrough was conceived as a technological milestone in sustainable luxury yachting. Built by Dutch shipbuilder Feadship, the vessel was designed to minimise both emissions and noise through an advanced hydrogen fuel-cell system and electric pod propulsion. Unlike conventional superyachts, it eliminates many of the mechanical components responsible for vibration and underwater noise, making it one of the quietest yachts ever constructed.
Although the yacht was originally commissioned for Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, he never took ownership. Before delivery, it was purchased by Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, founder and CEO of GFL Environmental.
How a quiet yacht became the centre of a noise controversy
According to Italian newspaper La Nazione, Breakthrough arrived off Scaglieri Beach on July 27 alongside its 52-foot support vessel, Breakthrough II. That evening, guests reportedly attended a private party while the yacht remained anchored in the Gulf of Biodola.
Residents and holidaymakers claimed the music echoed across the bay, disturbing the normally peaceful surroundings and prompting several complaints on social media. Despite the criticism, there were no reports of intervention by the police or Coast Guard, and no formal investigation into noise levels was announced.
What makes Breakthrough different from other superyachts
Measuring 390 feet in length, Breakthrough is regarded as the world's first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht. It combines luxury with advanced environmental technology, making it one of the most innovative vessels ever built.
The yacht stores around four tonnes of liquid hydrogen inside a 92-cubic-metre cryogenic tank maintained at approximately minus 253 degrees Celsius. Sixteen hydrogen fuel cells generate about three megawatts of electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, producing electricity, water and usable heat instead of conventional exhaust emissions.
How the hydrogen-powered system works
The hydrogen fuel cells primarily supply electricity for the yacht's extensive onboard facilities, including air conditioning, lighting, kitchens, swimming pools and entertainment systems. According to Feadship, these hotel services account for the majority of a superyacht's annual energy consumption.
The hydrogen system can keep these facilities operating for nearly a week while the yacht is anchored without relying on conventional generators. For longer voyages, Breakthrough also uses MTU generators capable of running on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel, giving it both long-range capability and lower emissions.
Why Breakthrough is considered an engineering milestone
Traditional superyachts rely on shaft-driven propulsion systems that generate vibration and underwater noise. Breakthrough instead uses electric pod propulsion, reducing mechanical movement and creating a much quieter experience for passengers while also lowering underwater sound that can affect marine life.
Its combination of hydrogen fuel cells, electric propulsion and hybrid biofuel technology has made it one of the most significant engineering achievements in the modern superyacht industry.
Although Breakthrough has attracted global attention, hydrogen-powered superyachts are still exceptionally uncommon. Liquid hydrogen has a far lower energy density by volume than conventional marine fuels, meaning it requires much larger, heavily insulated cryogenic storage tanks kept at around −253°C. Refuelling infrastructure is also limited, with only a handful of ports worldwide currently capable of handling liquid hydrogen safely. These challenges have slowed widespread adoption despite growing interest in low-emission marine propulsion.
One of the world's most exclusive charter yachts
Today, Breakthrough commands an estimated charter rate of around $4 million per week, making it one of the most expensive yachts available for hire. Its size, hydrogen technology and luxury amenities place it among the most advanced superyachts ever built.
While the vessel represents a major step forward in cleaner marine technology, its recent appearance off Italy's coast has shown that even groundbreaking engineering cannot prevent a celebration onboard from becoming international news.
