After more than three decades since their iconic debut, Bill and Ted are gearing up for another adventure, this time on the grand stage of Broadway. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, known for their roles as time-traveling high-school slackers in the 1989 film, are set to reunite in a revival of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot in fall 2025. Reeves will take on the role of Estragon, while Winter will portray Vladimir.
The production will be directed by award-winning British director Jamie Lloyd, with Reeves making his Broadway debut in this production. The show is scheduled to open at a yet-to-be-announced theater.
Expressing their excitement, Reeves and Winter, both 59, stated, “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays.” Director Jamie Lloyd also expressed his honor in collaborating with Reeves and Winter on Beckett’s masterpiece, calling it one of the greatest plays of all time.
Waiting for Godot, a play that delves into themes of existentialism and the human condition, originally premiered in the 1950s and has since become a seminal work in the world of theater. The play has left a lasting impact on popular culture, with references in various forms of media.
In addition to its Broadway run next fall, the production will return to London this September, featuring Lucian Msamati and Ben Whishaw in the lead roles.
Reeves and Winter first captured audiences' hearts in the Bill and Ted film franchise, starting with the 1989 classic Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The duo reprised their roles in subsequent films, including Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey and Bill and Ted Face The Music in 2020.
Reeves, known for his recent work in the John Wick series, is set to star in the upcoming film Good Fortune directed by Aziz Ansari. Winter, a multi-talented artist, recently completed production on Adulthood alongside Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario.
