The rare phenomenon was captured in a now-viral video from Arjunsar village. Shared by a forest officer on social media platform X, the clip shows vast stretches of land blanketed in white, resembling a winter scene more common to Himalayan regions than the arid plains of Rajasthan. The caption—“Not Kashmir. This is Bikaner.”—perfectly captured the disbelief of viewers.
This unusual weather shift is being attributed to a western disturbance that impacted several parts of Rajasthan over the past 24 hours. The system brought with it hailstorms, gusty winds, and light rainfall. While areas like Padampur in Sri Ganganagar recorded measurable rain, Bikaner stood out due to the sheer intensity of hail accumulation across open fields.
What makes this event even more surprising is its timing. Around the same period last year, Bikaner was experiencing peak summer conditions, with temperatures nearing 40°C. In contrast, this year has seen a noticeable drop, with temperatures hovering around 30°C, accompanied by unseasonal rain and hailstorms—an unusual combination for one of India’s driest regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for the region, indicating the possibility of continued weather activity. Forecasts suggest that more rainfall, hailstorms, thunderstorms, and strong winds could affect parts of Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, and Udaipur, particularly around April 7 and 8.
While the visuals have fascinated many online, the situation has also raised concerns among local farmers. Hailstorms of this magnitude can cause significant damage to standing crops, prompting calls for crop insurance support and relief measures.
For now, however, Bikaner’s rare transformation into a snow-like landscape has captured widespread attention—offering a surreal reminder of how unpredictable weather patterns can be.
