Why Bijapur Keeps Getting Undersold
Gol Gumbaz has one of the largest domes in the world, 44 metres in diameter, second only to St Peter's Basilica in Rome, and that fact alone pulls every bus tour in and out of Bijapur within a morning. The Whispering Gallery on its interior balcony is the trick everyone comes for: a whisper travels the circumference and returns to the opposite side with unsettling clarity. It works. It is worth doing. But the monument is a mausoleum built in 1656 for Muhammad Adil Shah, and the city he ruled still stands in pieces all around it, largely unvisited.
