'Biggest year' for Android yet — Android Show I/O Edition returns in May and here's what I expect

It appears Google will host another "The Android Show | I/O Edition" this year. It will be the second edition of the event after it was introduced last year.

Google has yet to officially announce a new Android Show but an unlisted YouTube video on the Google channel was spotted by 9to5Google. The video has since been deleted.

According to 9to5Google, this year's Android Show is supposed to air the week before Google I/O which kicks off on May 19. Instead, the Android-focused show will stream on Tuesday, May 12 starting at 10 am PT/1 pm ET/6 pm UK.

"This is going to be one of the biggest years for Android yet. Tune in to The Android Show | I/O Edition on Tuesday, May 12 at 10 AM PT and be the first to take a look at what the future holds," the video description reportedly read.

Last year's edition was a bit ho-hum, but Google did announce Material 3 Expression, Gemini in Android Auto and Find Hub to name a few things. Android XR and developer-focused announcements were reserved for I/O the following week.

It seems Google will do something similar with consumer announcements in The Android Show, while developer updates will appear during the conference.

What we expect to see: Aluminum OS?

Heading into Google I/O, what's next for Android is something of a mystery. Largely, this is because we're quite far into the Android 17 release cycle.

The first beta arrived in February and hit "Platform Stability" in March, meaning the Android 17 feature set is locked in, with future updates mostly meant to fix any issues or bugs before the full public launch.

We're not expecting anything major for Android 17 at I/O this year. Though Google could announce Pixel-exclusive features that could debut with the Pixel 11 series.

That being said, we could see details about other Android platforms, including Wear OS 7, Android XR and Android Auto.

One major announcement that would make the show the "biggest year" yet is the expected merger of Android and Chrome OS, allegedly dubbed Aluminum OS. The merger was confirmed last summer, but Google has stayed mum since then.

The operating system combination has been rumored to happen later this year, and the Android Show would be the perfect time for Google to reveal concrete details about Aluminum OS.
