Big Bash League side Sydney Thunder have written a new chapter in the history books of cricket, but for all the wrong reasons.
Alex Hales, who just starred in England's T20 World Cup winning side, and his Sydney Thunder teammates were bowled out for a pathetic 15 runs in 5.5 overs.
The total signalled the worst ever score in T20 history, as opponents Adelaide Strikers couldn't believe what had just happened. The Sydney-based team were set a target of 140, which was certainly within reach.
However, things turned pear-shaped immediately as they were skittled out within a ridiculous 35 balls. Henry Thornton took five wickets for just three runs for the victors.
The Thunder's extraordinary total is the lowest ever in T20 competition, with Turkey previously holding the worst score of 21 in their match against the Czech Republic in 2019
Meanwhile, the previous worst score in the BBL was 57 as the Melbourne Renegades were embarrassed against the Melbourne Stars in 2015.
The cricketing world were quick to flock to social media, most notably England Test captain Ben Stokes - who is eyeing a series whitewash against Pakistan in the third Test which starts tomorrow.
Mid-innings, Stokes took to Twitter to write "8-10 of 5" alongside seven shocked face emojis. The Sydney-based team had lost five wickets in the first 17 balls, and there was no turning back.
Hales, Matt Gilkes, Jason Sangha, Chris Green and Gurinder Sandhu all went back to the dressing room without scoring.
Brett Lee couldn't believe what he was witnessing. "I’ve never seen a game of cricket like this ever,” the Fox Cricket commentator said. “Daffy Duck’s going to get a cramp here! He’s been working hard all night – another duck.”
And fellow commentator Dan Ginnane said: "This is like an under 10s score."
