President Joe Biden is expected to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later Thursday morning to discuss developments relating to a hostage and ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, officials from the White House and Israeli government confirmed.
Vice President Kamala Harris is also expected to join the call, according to a White House official.
The call comes as Israel and Hamas are reportedly close to reaching a framework agreement for a deal, as indicated by an Israeli source familiar with the negotiations. Hamas has recently responded to the framework proposed by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, a move that Israeli officials believe could lead to detailed negotiations towards an agreement. However, the finalization of the deal is not yet confirmed.
Reports suggest that the US has proposed new language to help bridge gaps in discussions for the deal. The proposed language focuses on an initial phase where Israel and Hamas would engage in further negotiations with the aim of progressing to the second phase of the agreement.
A US official described the response as constructive but noted that more work is required to move forward.
An Israeli official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, mentioned that Netanyahu will convene a cabinet meeting on Thursday night.
Biden and Netanyahu last spoke on May 6 and are expected to meet in Washington in the coming weeks when the Israeli prime minister visits to address Congress. US and Israeli officials are currently finalizing logistical details for the meeting, which is likely to take place at the White House. The meeting is expected to proceed as planned, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
The call between Biden and Netanyahu occurs amidst domestic challenges for Biden following a recent debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict remains a significant concern for many within the Democratic Party, including younger voters.
