President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order prioritizing federal grants for projects that include labor agreements, wage standards, and benefits like access to child care and apprenticeship programs. The administration aims to boost economic growth by improving conditions for workers.
The Acting Labor Secretary emphasized the importance of good jobs that offer security, benefits, union rights, safe working conditions, and retirement with dignity. This move aligns with the administration's focus on supporting workers.
Biden will announce the order at a union training center in Michigan, highlighting the significant role organized labor is expected to play in the upcoming election. Vice President Kamala Harris is seeking support from unions like AFL-CIO to mobilize voters in key states.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has also engaged with organized labor, with the Teamsters President speaking at the Republican National Convention. The Teamsters have yet to endorse a candidate officially, but Harris is scheduled to meet with them.
The executive order will establish a task force to coordinate policy development aimed at enhancing worker benefits. The administration's investments in infrastructure, computer chip manufacturing, and renewable energy have spurred significant private-sector commitments, totaling $900 billion.
Despite these efforts, voter concerns about inflation remain prevalent in 2022. However, the impact of these projects may take several years to materialize fully.
