The Biden-Harris campaign has officially changed its principal committee's name with the Federal Election Commission following President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the race. The campaign committee submitted paperwork to the FEC on Sunday, indicating a new name, 'Harris for President.'
In a letter to the commission, the committee declared that Vice President Harris is now a candidate for the United States President in the 2024 election and will focus solely on campaign activities for that office.
It is important to note that control of the campaign's substantial war chest, amounting to $95.9 million as of June, hinges on Harris's status on the Democrats' 2024 ticket. The Campaign Legal Center clarified that these funds would be available to the Democrats' presidential ticket for general election use only if Harris is the party's nominee or vice-presidential nominee.
Trevor Potter, the founder and president of Campaign Legal Center, explained that the application of FEC rules is contingent on the Democratic nominee for president. If Harris is on the ticket as either the presidential or vice-presidential nominee, she and her running mate can utilize the existing campaign funds for the general election.
However, if Harris does not secure a spot on the Democrats' 2024 ticket, the funds cannot be directly transferred to a new candidate. In such a scenario, the current campaign account could be transformed into a political action committee to indirectly utilize its funds.
