Biden Administration Considers Providing More Support To Ukraine

Joe Biden U.S. President Biden visits Milwaukee

Former Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Veneman, discussed the potential for the Biden administration to provide more robust support to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. Veneman highlighted the importance of the U.S. responding to Ukraine's requests for military assistance, such as F-16s and Abrams tanks, despite initial hesitancy.

Veneman emphasized that once weapons are transferred to Ukraine, they become the sovereign weapons of Ukraine, not American assets. He expressed support for providing Ukraine with the capability to strike military targets in its national defense against Russia, noting that Putin's threats of war with NATO are likely bluster.

Veneman underscored that a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO would be against Russia's interests due to the risk of escalation to nuclear warfare. He urged the U.S. to support Ukraine more decisively to pressure Putin and enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities.

The ability for Ukraine to use long-range weapons deeper into Russia was discussed as a critical strategic advantage. While the impact of individual capabilities may not be game-changing, a comprehensive support package from the U.S. could contribute to a theory of victory for Ukraine.

Veneman speculated on potential scenarios, including a more aggressive policy under a Harris administration or a US withdrawal leading to increased risks of escalation and spillover. He highlighted the complexities of the decision for the Biden administration but expressed optimism that they would ultimately provide the necessary support to Ukraine.
