Bid to cut rising insurance costs in disaster-hit areas

Solutions to make insurance more affordable and accessible for Australian households as the nation continues to be battered by natural disasters are being thrashed out under an Albanese government partnership with the insurance sector.

Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt met industry representatives in Brisbane on Thursday in a bid to create a plan that will address rising insurance premiums and help communities be better prepared for disasters.

The increasing number of disasters because of climate change is leading to higher costs for consumers and more people buying less or foregoing insurance completely.

Vulnerable households then suffer greater harm and the government is faced with higher bills.

Senator Watt said climate change was fuelling the risk disasters posed to households in many areas of the country.

"Partnering with insurers to share information on disaster risk will allow us to better target mitigation," he said.

"This is the next step in our plan to build Australia's resilience to natural disasters."
