Thai society has again been shaken to its core by a deadly shooting spree at a school in the vicinity of Bangkok. After major mass shooting cases such as the Nakhon Ratchasima attack in 2020, the Nong Bua Lam Phu massacre in 2022, and the shooting at Siam Paragon shopping complex in 2023, it is soul-crushing to see such a vicious incident happen again. Evidence and data about the perpetrator suggest that violence in society is becoming more complex and harder to identify.
The perpetrator -- reportedly a polite and diligent 14-year-old student -- opened fire on teachers and fellow students at Debsirin Nonthaburi School yesterday morning, killing eight people and injuring 21 others, with eight of them reported to be in critical condition. Police found his grandparents dead in a pool of blood and suspect the boy may have killed them before leaving for school. The boy later took his own life.
