Best winter running shoes for grip, water resistance and warmth

While battling through the elements in winter is enough to dissuade even the most keen runners, if you invest in the right kit, trudging through the wind, rain and snow suddenly becomes a walk (or run) in the park.

Well, not really, but it certainly makes it a touch more enjoyable. The best place to start? Trainers.

What trainers are best for running in winter?

First up, you need to consider the conditions you’re likely to be running in. If it’s mild and dry, there’s no need to swap out your regular kicks.

If you live in the UK, though, it’s pretty certain that you’ll be up against wet and windy conditions for most of the upcoming season, so it’s best to look out for shoes with a water-resistant upper to avoid any uncomfortable chafing. If the temperatures are sub-zero, then you’ll also need some advanced traction underfoot to combat slippy surfaces.

As explained by athlete, coach and New Balance x ASOS Ambassador Lillie Bleasdale, “The key thing to think about in wet, cold, icy or snowy weather is safety. Selecting a shoe with a better grip and a water-repellent upper will help you stay safe on the roads and clear of any blisters or rubbing due to moisture - which might stop your running journey in its tracks. Look out for materials like Gore-Tex for a failsafe solution.”

She continues “I’d suggest New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v12 Permafrost. Whilst they’re not fully waterproof, they’ll be enough to combat light showers without compromising on bounce or spring in your step. The laces also have a toggle fitting which is super easy to close and lace up if you’re wearing gloves in the colder months.”

As the days get shorter, running in the dark becomes inevitable, so reflective accents become all the more important, as Jonny Mellor, fellow New Balance athlete describes, “Staying safe is very important, so wearing reflective gear and accessories is a must to ensure you’re visible to others, especially when you’re running in low light conditions.”

Bleasdale agrees: “Stick to well-lit routes and run in the daylight when you can. From a safety point of view, it’s key to ensure that you’re visible and can be seen if heading out during low light. Make sure to wear reflective items if you have no choice but to run at these times.”

If you’re a trail runner, you might want to think about a sturdier option. Mellor’s top tip: “If you’re planning on running on the trails, then I’d recommend shoes with robust outsoles that provide traction on wet or slippery surfaces.”

His favourites? “My go-to winter mileage shoe on the trails is the Fresh Foam More Trail v3 which feels comfortable and cushioned as well as providing excellent traction off road - or The Fresh Foam X 880v13 Gore-Tex is a fantastic road shoe option if you prefer to run on tarmac.”
