Refreshing your bedroom with new bedding is one of the easiest ways to make the whole space feel transformed. And while nothing quite beats the luxurious feel of bamboo sheets or a crisp linen set, you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune to give your bed a stylish update.
In much the same way supermarkets have become unexpected destinations for fashion, they're now making serious strides in homeware, too. Shoppers who once popped in for groceries are increasingly leaving with trend-led clothing, furniture and soft furnishings that wouldn't look out of place in far pricier stores. The gap between supermarket collections and premium brands has never felt smaller, with many retailers focusing on elevated design, quality fabrics and timeless finishes at accessible prices.
Marks & Spencer is a prime example, offering bedding with thoughtful details such as contrasting stripes, embroidered trims and delicate floral prints that give a boutique feel without the designer price tag. Habitat at Sainsbury's has also carved out a reputation for contemporary homeware, with modern colour palettes, playful patterns and relaxed washed textures that bring an effortless look to the bedroom.
To see whether these supermarket buys live up to the hype, I tested a range of bedding sets from across the high street, assessing everything from quality and comfort to design, durability and ease of care. The result is a shortlist of options that prove you don't need to splash out for a bed that looks – and feels – expensive.

Sainsbury's home crinkle bedding set
Rating: 5/5
Best: supermarket bedding overall
Material: Polyester
Why we love it
- Ultra soft
- Great price
Take note
- Not as breathable as linen
The Sainsbury's home crinkle bedding set was one of the biggest surprises of my testing, thanks to its exceptional softness. In fact, it quickly became one of those sets I didn’t want to take off the bed. The reverse has a cosy, brushed finish that feels warm and comforting against the skin, while the crinkled top layer adds texture and gives it a more expensive, relaxed look than the price tag suggests. It’s the sort of bedding that makes your bed instantly inviting without any effort.
It isn’t the most breathable option I tried, so hot sleepers may find it a little too insulating during warmer weather. However, if you prefer bedding that feels cocooning and comfortable, especially through autumn and winter, it’s excellent value for money at just £22. It also impressed after washing, drying surprisingly quickly on a clothes horse and emerging with its textured finish intact, meaning there’s no need to worry about ironing.

Asda box pleat striped duvet set
Rating: 3.5/5
Best: budget supermarket bedding
Material: Polycotton
Why we love it
- Very affordable
- Fun colourways
Take note
- Not very high quality
George at Asda’s box pleat striped duvet set taps neatly into the pleated-edge bedding trend without the premium price tag. The oversized contrasting stripes create a bold, maximalist look, while the pleated trim gives it an extra design detail that helps it feel more elevated than a basic striped set. Available in colour combinations including blue and red, mint and purple, mocha and blue, and pink and green, there’s plenty of choice depending on how adventurous you want your bedroom to feel.
At just £12 for a single set, there are inevitably some compromises. The polycotton fabric doesn’t feel quite as soft or weighty as the cotton-rich options I tested, but it’s practical and easy to live with. The material washes well, requires very little maintenance and resists creasing, while the popper fastening is quicker and easier to use than traditional buttons. For anyone decorating on a budget or after a trend-led refresh, it’s a fun and affordable option.

M&S pure cotton narrow stripe ruffle bedding set
Rating: 4.5/5
Best: striped supermarket bedding
Material: Cotton
Why we love it
- Soft, elegant design
- Ruffled edge detail
Take note
- Thick material might be too warm come the summer
If delicate patterns and subtle details are your thing, this M&S bedding set is an easy favourite. The narrow stripe design has a timeless, understated quality that feels classic without being boring, while the ruffle trim around the duvet cover and pillowcases adds just enough interest to elevate it above standard striped bedding. I tested the green version, which brought a fresh, spring-like feel to the room, though it’s also available in sophisticated grey, bright blue and statement pink.
The quality of the fabric immediately stands out. Made from pure cotton, it has a reassuringly thick feel without becoming heavy, striking a nice balance between comfort and breathability. It felt soft straight from the packet and became even more comfortable after washing. My only slight criticism is that warmer sleepers may find it a touch cosy during the hottest summer nights, but for year-round use it’s a beautifully finished set that looks considerably more expensive than it is.

F&F home blue washed cotton block floral duvet set double
Rating: 4/5
Best: floral supermarket bedding set
Material: Cotton
Why we love it
- Contrast reverse side
- Soft floral design
Take note
- Not the softest
This floral bedding set from F&F at Tesco really won me over during testing. On the shelf, the soft blue floral print looks fairly traditional, but once it was on the bed it brought a calm, fresh feel to the room that made the whole space feel brighter and more inviting. The reversible design is another bonus, with a contrasting pattern on the reverse allowing you to switch up the look whenever you fancy a change.
Made from 100 per cent cotton, it offers a nice level of softness and feels breathable enough for comfortable year-round use. It doesn’t quite have the silky, premium finish you’ll find with more expensive cotton bedding, but it performs impressively well for the price. It washed without losing its shape or colour and remained comfortable after repeated use. For shoppers looking for an easy-to-style design that balances practicality, comfort and value, it’s a dependable choice.

M&S pure linen bedding set
Rating: 4.5/5
Best: linen supermarket bedding
Material: Linen
Why we love it
- Highly breathable
- Well designed
Take note
- Pure linen bedding costs more than other materials
For warm nights and anyone who naturally sleeps hot, M&S’s pure linen bedding set is one of the standout performers I tested. Made from 100 per cent linen, it has the naturally breathable, temperature-regulating qualities the fabric is known for, feeling cool, airy and lightweight without sacrificing quality. Unlike some linen bedding that can feel stiff at first, this set is impressively soft straight from the packet and only becomes more comfortable with use and washing.
The design is equally refined, with understated stitched edging around the duvet cover and pillowcases and discreet clear buttons that let the quality of the fabric do the talking. There’s also a wide selection of colours, from soft blush pink to slate blue and more neutral shades. The only trade-off is that, true to linen’s nature, it emerges from the wash looking noticeably more creased than cotton alternatives. If you embrace that relaxed, lived-in aesthetic, though, it’s all part of the charm.

What is the best supermarket bedding?
Overall, while each supermarket bedding set brought something different to the test, the Sainsbury's Home crinkle bedding set emerged as the winner. The set delivered the best balance of comfort, style and value, with an unmatched softness that made it even more difficult to leave the bed each morning. Though not the most breathable option, its cosy brushed underside and elevated textured finish gave it a premium feel far beyond its £18 price tag. I also loved the look of the M&S pure cotton narrow stripe ruffle bedding set while the supermarket’s linen bedding is high quality and costs a fraction of the price of other brands.
