Best mirror dash cams to record all angles

Mirror, signal, manoeuvre.

While you may know your Highway Code like the back of your handbrake, there are many out there who wilfully make manoeuvres without even glancing at their rearview mirror or, indeed, having even the slightest intention of indicating before swerving across in front of you.

These are the people who cause accidents. They’re also the kind of people who would easily consider trying to lump all the blame for any bang-ups on you, letting your insurance bear the financial brunt.

The key to avoiding forking out when others are at fault is providing proof that the other party was to blame. The absolutely, unequivocally best way to achieve this in metaphorical stone format is with video and GPS from a dash cam. Recently, I looked at general dash cams, but now I’m back on the road with the dash cam taken to its ultimate conclusion, becoming part of the very fabric of the car itself by serving as both cam and rearview mirror. Yes, I give you my definitive pick of the mirror dash cam crop.

So, what do you need to look for?

Well, despite what you may hear, size is important.

While you want a decently proportioned mirror, you also need to ensure it’s not so big that it stops you from having a clear view out of the windscreen, which is why I’ve put each dash cam’s diagonal dimension on top of the accompanying tech spec.

Also, you want at least 1080p resolution for crystal clear images, a wide viewing angle, night vision and ample internal storage. With all that in place, you’re good to go, safe in the knowledge that your mirror cam will clearly catch any car that dares collide with you.

Jansite 10-inch Mirror Dash cam

Best for: Low-cost road recording

Freshly upgraded this very year, Jansite’s mirrored 10-incher is quite the package for such a low price. It has dual dash cams to cover front and back, staring back at you as you drive is a 10-inch touchscreen unit with a 1080p resolution camera that comes complete with a Sony sensor to capture and/or stream truly detailed footage of the road in front of you at a wide 170° angle.

Featuring Super Night Vision, even images caught on the darkest of evenings are bright and clear, so no need to fret over things that go bump in the night. Loop recording also means that you don’t have to fiddle about with SD card (up to 128GB, not included) content, as the Jansite automatically records over the oldest footage, so it’s cleverly convenient too.

Round the rear, meanwhile, you get a similarly Sony-sensored, 1080p, IP68 water- and dust-resistance-rated external camera, offering a 140-degree viewing angle, equally impressive night vision, WDR image processing technology to enhance glare suppression, and Parking Assistance to boot (as it were), so as you reverse, the mirror dash cam automatically displays the guideline, so you can clearly and easily see what lurks behind you.

With a built-in G-sensor and 24-hour parking monitor, even if you’re nowhere near and the car is parked when it gets pummelled, the cameras will automatically kick in, recording all the action as it happens, ready for you to review on your return.

Coming complete with a 10-metre car camera cable for ease of installation, for well under £100, the Jansite is a real bargain, so if you’re serious about avoiding any question of liability following a crash but low on cash, look no further.

  • Size: 10-inches
  • Resolution: Dual 1080p
  • Viewing angle: 170° Front. 140° Rear
  • GPS: No
  • Storage: Up to 128GB SD

Auto-Vox V5Pro

Best for: Covering all corners… and bases

Adding a GPS module to the mix now and ramping up the price accordingly, what we have here is a 9.35-inch option that also covers both front and rear in glorious 1080p, with recording at 30fps covering 145° facing and 25fps and 150° behind you. Measuring 9.35 inches on the diagonal, the main mirror unit comes packing a fully laminated Stream Media Touch Screen that’s hugely responsive without getting twitchy about near touches – always handy when you’re driving – and gives you a field of view four times that of a standard mirror, meaning its bye-bye to blind spots.

Connecting to your car fuse box, thus doing away with dangling wires, it also features Auto Power On, so all you have to do is start your engine to begin recording, and in Parking Mode both cameras will automatically begin their business as soon as they detect collision.

As mentioned, the rear camera comes 1080p able too, capable of capturing stunningly clear images free from headlight glare thanks to its blue glass design. Akin to the Jansite, the Auto-Vox V5Pro also doubles as a parking assistant, helpfully throwing up a rear display guide on the mirror to help you reverse into parking spaces without taking out other vehicles around you.

Seamless loop recording and G-senor come as a given, and split-screen display lets you view both and back feed simultaneously, plus GPS tracking means you can add in your location alongside your footage if you ever need to prove your innocence in an accident to your insurers.

Now, the V5Pro comes with a mirror bracket that you’ll need to fit, alongside 4x bracket adapters to ensure it fits your specific vehicle, but if you still struggle there is a custom service email you can use to obtain other adaptors to solve the problem, so installation should be available to all, even if you have to initially experiment a little.

In all, this is a very neat solution at a size that doesn’t make a mockery of the average windscreen. Some truly terrible drivers are out there, so grab a V5Pro dash cam and keep yourself covered.

  • Size: 9.35-inches
  • Resolution: Dual 1080p
  • Viewing Angle: 145° Front, 150° Rear
  • GPS: Yes
  • Storage: Up to 64GB SD
  • Special Features: Touchscreen, Night Vision, Parking Monitor

WolfBox G900

Best for: Seeing the big, bright picture

Okay, some people have bigger-than-average windscreens and, as such, want a bigger-than-average mirror dash cam as, otherwise it might look a bit lost against an ocean of glass. For those people, we come to one of the most epic options available, the WolfBox G900.

Behold: 12 inches of incredible 4K up front, 2.5K bringing up the rear and a viewing angle of an almighty 170°, with enhanced image colour and shadow detail, bringing you footage on a level with films at your local multiplex.

With GPS keeping track of your route and Super Night Vision bringing detail to darkness, plus 24/7 Automatic Parking Mode for protection, Sight Assist for parking, and split-screen viewing for the best of both cam worlds, the WolfBox G900 is easy to hardwire into the car’s fuse box and the bundled 10ft cam cable keeps the back camera connected (inside or outside fitting) and feeding back onto the on-board (up to 128GB) micro SD card.

With a nicely responsive touchscreen putting all the info you need at your fingertips too, the results recorded really are striking, making the G900 not just a top-level dual dash cam, but also a means to capturing stunning scenery through continuous recording, should you fancy yourself as a travel blogger.

At £220, it’s not cheap, but for dual cams delivering 4K and 2.5K with all the bells and whistles, the WolfBox G900 is worth every penny.

Road Angel Halo View

Best for: Image excellence and dull-features

I like Road Angel; I’ve been using its products for decades and most recently reviewed its Halo Pro dash cam right here, so the mirror-based View seemed like an obvious choice for this little lot.

Featuring a nicely detailed 10-inch touchscreen and dual cameras front and rear that, respectively, record in 2K and 1080p, the Road Angel racks up the features, with HD night vision, 24-hour loop recording for security, a G-sensor for quick pick-up on any bumps, winter heating mode for when the weather turns, and parking assist for getting into tight spaces – so everything you could need in one sensibly sized package.

The footage is, as you might expect, deeply detailed, crisp and colourful, with the rear camera able to actively suppress headlights behind you, getting rid of glare and leaving you with perfect pictures of whoever is hanging on your posterior. Also on that, with Reverse Gear Activation, the back-end camera bursts into life the moment reverse gear is selected, making the View an ideal choice for van drivers with windowless doors or just those whose view behind is obscured.

Powered via USB and coming with a 5.5-metre front-to-rear cable, it’s another all-round winner from the Road Angel.

  • Size: 10 inch
  • Dimensions: 1.8 x 26.5 x 7.3cm (DxWxH)
  • Resolution: 2K Front, 1080p Rear
  • Viewing Angle: 140° Front, 120° Rear
  • GPS: No

LT2CP H6-4K

Best for: Big screen size, relatively little price

The last in my line-up offers a solid 12-inches of very slick-looking display on which can be splashed top-end 4K coverage from the front and 1080p pictures from the rear camera, thanks to a superior Sony IMX415 sensor and seven layers of high-quality glass lenses plus F1.8 aperture.

Hooking up via your car’s fuse box, the LT2CP H6-4K gives you a 170° view of the road, so you can see far more behind you than you would with a conventional mirror, making it perfect for fleeing pursuers in an exciting car chase, with the vibrant touchscreen letting you switch between camera, split-screen, parking assist, parking monitoring, and g-sensor with a couple of taps.

Then there’s the Super Night Vision – by utilising strong light suppression and advanced AHD technology, the H6-4K provides clear, sharp images even in the lowest-light conditions, so you’ll never have to worry about being unable to work what the reg was on the car that clipped you late at night or, indeed, what colour it was.

An excellent in-car safety solution at a very reasonable price, the LT2CP H6-4K will be too big for many makes and models of cars, but if you have the space free on your windscreen without having to duck down constantly to see, enjoy the immersive driving experience this affords!

  • Size: 12-inches
  • Resolution: 4K Front, 1080p Rear
  • Viewing Angle: 170°
  • GPS: No
  • Storage: Up to 128GB SD
  • Special Features: Touchscreen, Parking Mode, Wi-Fi
