The best hanging egg chairs are among the most versatile, stylish and budget-friendly garden furniture pieces you can add to your outdoor space, whether you’ve got a balcony, small patio or acres of greenery to decorate.
Combining the playful appeal of a suspended hammock with a comfy chair or love seat, the best hanging egg chairs offer more than seating, enabling you to gently rock, sway or swing in the sunshine. They entice guests to stay and socialise, but also offer cocoon-like seclusion for contemplative moments you want to spend reading, meditating, studying or working outdoors.
There’s an egg chair to suit every colour scheme, aesthetic choice (from rustic to contemporary) and family requirement out there, whether you’re after a solo-seater design or a side-by-side, couples-friendly option. Egg basket silhouettes also vary: I tested round balls, elongated cocoons, teardrops and even non-hanging designs.
Made from natural-looking synthetic rattan, egg chair baskets are typically suspended by a chain that attaches to a metal pole and sturdy metal base. They can be used indoors or out, but are intentionally designed with materials that can withstand the UK’s soggiest, windiest and sunniest days. The best part? Egg chairs are an easy DIY job you can put together in less than an hour.

Dunelm Singapore hanging egg chair

Best: egg chair overall
Dimensions: H 184cm x W 120cm x D 118cm
Materials: Powder-coated metal, rattan, fabric
Care instructions: Wipe clean only
Assembly: Flat pack
Why we love it
- Egg chair shape is optimal for both relaxing and swinging
- Can curl up in it comfortably
- Easy to move around the garden
- Looks and feels more expensive than it is
Take note
- Oatmeal-coloured cushion can get stained after rain
Dunelm Singapore hanging egg chair ticks every box as the best hanging egg chair I tested. The three-quarter circle, powder-coated metal base is easy to manoeuvre and find space for in smaller gardens (compared with full-circle base designs). The weatherproof rattan basket is particularly inviting too, thanks to its elongated cocoon shape, tan colour and spacious seat capacity.

The egg chair seat even has openings for your hands to grip onto if you want to swing, while it still hangs low enough to the ground to make it an ideal baby-rocking zone or relaxation station for reading and studying (it’s my teenager’s preferred spot for GCSE revision).
The plush, textured cushion is also a winner, offering similar arm rest support as pricier chairs from Cox and Cox and Garden Trading Co. However, it isn’t machine washable, and does take a couple of hours to dry out after a storm.

Wilko outdoor essentials Sophia double white rattan hanging chair

Best: budget egg chair
Dimensions: H 195cm x W 163cm x D 123cm
Materials: Powder-coated metal frame, rattan resin wickers, polyester cushions
Care instructions: Wipe clean
Assembly: Flat pack
Why we love it
- Sturdy
- Spacious seating area
- Good value for money
Take note
- You might want to add a few more cushions for extra support and comfort
You get bang for your buck with Wilko’s Sophia double egg design, the best budget egg chair I tested, which features a white rattan, resin wicker seat mounted on a black powder-coated metal frame, with two poles and four legs. The double-seater is kitted out with two seat cushions and two head cushions.

While decently waterproof, the cushions are the weakest element. They’re a bit flimsy and, since they don’t fully cover the seat, it can get uncomfortable when a body part slips onto the frame. Still, the chair is sturdy, roomy and excellent for swinging and snuggling.
It’s a great choice for families: my younger kids spend hours clambering on it and rocking back and forth, while my teens sit and have chats with friends.

OHS foldable rattan double hanging egg chair

Best: double hanging egg chair
Dimensions: H 195cm x W 135cm x D 67cm
Materials: Metal, rattan, polyester
Care instructions: Machine-washable covers
Assembly: Flat pack; foldable for easy storage
Why we love it
- Machine-washable, zip-off cushion covers
- Fold-up seat for easy storage
- Spacious seating area
Take note
- Assembly trickier than some other models I tested
- Cushion fabric starts to show signs of wear quickly
My family members spent an afternoon gently swaying in OHS’s foldable rattan design, the best double hanging egg chair I tested, commenting how in the sunshine – with an alcohol-free beer in hand – it felt “just like being on holiday”.
It’s also excellent for working: I can perch my laptop on my lap and gently swing back and forth, or place it on the cushion to my side as a pseudo-desk of sorts. And watching my kids scramble and swing on it, I can attest this chair is a sturdy seat and play area in one.

It comes with a large and comfy base cushion and two head cushions, which withstand rain well: flip the main cushion over when wet and give it half an hour to dry before taking a seat again. The metal frame stands on four feet (useful for shoving against patio walls) with two metal bars suspending the seat.
The double bar gives a sense of extra security, promising to hold up to 240kg; however, it does emit more than a few creaks whenever my 6ft, 90kg husband rocks in it.

Comfy Egg large single egg

Best: weather-resistant hanging egg chair
Dimensions: H 190cm x W 103cm x D 80cm
Materials: Powder-coated steel frame, synthetic rattan, polyester cushions
Care instructions: Wipe clean
Assembly: Partial assembly required
Why we love it
- Woven construction looks the part and feels sturdy
- Water doesn’t penetrate past the top layer on cushions, so you can sit on the other side more or less immediately
- Great variety of styles and colours on offer
Take note
- Assembly is easier with two people
- Chair can bang against steel bar while swinging
Comfy Egg has an impressive selection of hanging egg chairs to choose from, in different shapes (teardrop, cocoon, double), colours (brown, grey, cream, a combination of the above) and even base styles (choose from circular or four-legged), so there really is a style, size and shape for every budget and outdoor space.

I tested the bestselling KD0 version – a teardrop basket, made from synthetic rattan, tightly woven in a star-shaped construction that sets this chair apart from all the others – and seems a success in all weathers. On sunny days, light filters in through the basket in lovely patterns and it also offers shade when needed.
The best weather resistant egg I tested, the basket boasts UV protection so shouldn’t fade from sun exposure. The design keeps rain out, too and I noticed the Comfy Egg’s cushions stayed drier than egg chairs with a rope-and-rattan structure.
The one thing I didn’t love? The chair can sometimes bang against the powder-coated steel bar when you swing on it. While the fold-down teardrop shape makes it easier to transport and move through narrow areas, assembly is also much easier with two people.

Cox & Cox Icaria single hanging chair

Best: design-led hanging egg chair
Dimensions: H 186cm x W 108cm x D 130cm
Materials: Iron frame with wicker, polyester and silk floss seat pad
Care instructions: Wipe clean/hand wash
Assembly: Partial assembly required
Why we love it
- Sturdy
- Stunning design
- Comfortable, relaxing cocoon shape
Take note
- Cushion seat corners were still wet hours after a storm
- Not designed for swinging
Cox and Cox is a great destination for egg chairs, where you’ll find styles from teardrops to narrow and wider cocoons. The Icaria’s round bauble seat, in a natural hue, matches its metal frame, making it a stunning addition to any outdoor space that can turn the blandest patch of grass into a meditative idyll.

While primarily designed for individual seating, my younger two, aged eight and 10, loved lying side-by-side in this one, explaining it felt like a “nest.” It doesn’t swing, but spins gently, with hand grips to grab onto as you twist and bob. It’s my top pick for relaxation: I spent hours on it reading, listening to podcasts and meditating.
It’s quick and easy to assemble, and the rounded shape offers substantial shade and seclusion. The cushions are plush and have a built-in arm rest. They didn’t completely soak through in the rain, but did take most of the day to dry. I also couldn’t get the head pillow into an optimal position, so ended up taking it off and using it as a cushion instead.

Garden Trading frilford egg chair

Best: teardrop-shaped hanging egg chair
Dimensions: H 195cm x W 120cm x D 110cm
Materials: Rust-free aluminium, polyester, synthetic rattan and rope
Care instructions: Removable covers, spot clean only
Assembly: Partial assembly required
Why we love it
- Relaxing cocoon shape
- Comfortable cushions
- Stylish and hardwearing design
Take note
- Blow-the-budget price tag
- Not the best for small spaces
Garden Trading frilford’s design is the best teardrop-shaped hanging egg chair I tested. It’s a family favourite thanks to its chic design, rustic neutral stylings and textured (almost tweed-like) cushions. It offers the best seating experience of any single-seater egg chair I tried thanks to its ultra-plush filling, built-in armrests and substantial head cushion.

While the chair is weatherproof, with a rust-free, UV- and frost-resistant aluminium base, the cushions aren’t meant to be left outside year-round, and can deteriorate. Handily, they have zip-off covers for easy spot cleaning.
The teardrop shape offers a cocooning experience, making it a great space to work, journal, chat on the phone and snuggle. Although it’s not technically designed for two people, I found this chair spacious enough to comfortably have a child next to me for prolonged periods (it can handle up to 150kg).

Barker and Stonehouse Castello natural garden swing egg chair

Best: mid-range hanging egg chair
Dimensions: H 186cm x W 105cm x D 129cm
Materials: Anti-rust iron, PE wicker, UV proof polyester cushions
Care instructions: Wipe clean/hand wash
Assembly: Partial assembly required, or you can book professional assembly
Why we love it
- Eye-catching design
- Relaxing, cocoon shape
- UV-resistant cushions
Take note
- Cushions aren't waterproof
Barker and Stonehouse’s Castello egg chair is like your own cocoon swing for the garden, with a chic rounded bauble shape and matching grey on silver. It resembles Cox and Cox’s Icaria design most closely, but the weatherproof wicker isn’t woven as tightly together, which does mean the cushions are more prone to getting wet. However, the shape, style and suspension placement make this seat absolutely glorious to swing on, adding some of that “treehouse magic” to any garden.

The cushions are UV-resistant but sadly not weather-proof (the brand recommends keeping cushions stored away or covered to protect them from rain). I discovered this the hard way when they got soaked and realised they became completely waterlogged, dripping water through when I turned them over.

Atkin & Thyme Lauren double cocoon egg chair

Best: luxury egg chair
Dimensions: H 153cm x W 172cm x D 113cm
Materials: Powder-coated aluminium frame, laminate wood-effect tabletop, rope
Care instructions: Covers zip off; wipe clean
Assembly: Partial assembly required
Why we love it
- Stunning design
- Wonderfully comfortable
- Great weatherproofing
Take note
- Assembly required three people
- Pricey
Atkin & Thyme’s double cocoon egg chair isn’t a hanging model, but merited inclusion because it’s a glorious piece of furniture that’s somehow as comfortable as a bed. I managed to completely recline all 5ft 8in of myself on it for naps, as well as having some really lovely snuggles with multiple kids – it easily fits up to three young children, or two adults, at a time.

The elegant design looks natural, but is made from durable, waterproof materials, with water-repellent and UV-resistant cushions – these feature a super-absorbent mesh underlayer and are very quick-drying (simply flip over after a shower and you should be able to sit straightaway). If you’ve got the outdoor space – and the budget for a four-figure egg chair – this is the ultimate sumptuous and inviting nest to relax on.

How the best egg chairs were tested
Having just undergone a significant home revamp that was due to culminate in extensive work on our “postage stamp sized” London garden, testing egg chairs helped me realise I didn’t need to undertake a costly garden revamp: I simply needed better outdoor furniture to accommodate myself, my husband and our four children, aged eight to 15.
I’ve been testing single and double egg chairs, budget and luxe buys, flat pack designs and more for the past three-months-and-counting. When testing, I considered the following criteria:
