Best games console deals for Black Friday 2024: Offers on Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch OLED and more

Black Friday was born across the Atlantic and marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

It takes place on the day after Thanksgiving when families work off their turkey dinner by running around shopping malls and snapping up bargains at retailers both little and large. The discount fever caught on here in the UK and has been a staple in the sales calendar ever since. Now there is no category immune from a slash in RRP – from TVs to laptops, fashion to furniture.

Gaming is one such industry where you are bound to bag a bargain.

Each Christmas, without fail, Nintendo’s Switch remains one of the most sought-after present ideas, seven years after it was first unveiled in March 2017. This is closely followed by the Xbox Series X and PS5 for gaming lovers who are yet to get their hands on the consoles from Microsoft and Sony respectively.

These consoles are never immune from the Black Friday sales fun. You will even find VR headsets included with the likes of the Meta Quest leading the way. And for those who are lucky enough to own one of the above already, there will be games, accessories, and bundles on offer to keep your collection up to date.

A great gift for any children, teenagers, or big kids, they’ll be able to play favourites like Mario Kart, Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed on their own or with friends. It’s the perfect time to bank stocking fillers, Secret Santa or jaw-dropping presents that will be the best gift under the tree. You’ll save some big bucks that will make all the difference when it comes to the Yuletide celebrations.

Give the gift of gaming with reductions across the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X or S, PlayStation 5 as well as games, bundles and accessories. You can find these bargains at John Lewis, Amazon, Currys and more.

Meta Quest 3

Best for: Joining the mind-blowing metaverse

No, not a PS5 and now an Xbox Series X, but rather the very latest entry point into the world of VR gaming, the Meta Quest 3; and what an entry point it is too as having been hands-on and head-in with the device, I can quite honestly and emphatically say that I’m a complete and utter convert.

Currently costing about the same as the console twins, what you get in the box is the headset with the standard pre-installed facial interface, 2x Touch Plus controllers and power gubbins, so all quite simple and straightforward. Then you download the Meta Quest app on your phone, install some apps, slip on the headset and slip seamlessly into the virtual world.

Using mixed reality, you can let the Quest 3 measure and map the movable space within the room or do it manually, then bring up the virtual control panel to select games, TV streaming channels or, well, all manner of marvellous things to get started. Naturally, I waded straight in with some battle royales.

Games cost anything from free to around £30 for heavy hitters like Resident Evil and The Walking Dead, or up to £45 for stunning new stuff like Asgard’s Wrath 2. All of which are – and I can’t stress this enough – utterly thrilling to play.

With an adjustable head-strap, it’s simple to find a comfortable fit, and the ergonomic controls are intuitive to use.

While I’ll never abandon console or PC play, the Meta Quest 3 has dazzled me and thoroughly turned my head with its truly immersive play, sucking me in with its irresistible succubus charms.

Finally, I should probably mention that, yes, you can do much more than just play games with the Meta Quest 3, with other equally amazing work and entertainment options available.

Meta Quest 3S All-In-One Mixed Reality Headset and Controllers, 128GB, White

Have you dreamed of DJing at a sold-out venue? Leaving Earth to explore no-gravity at the International Space Station? Considered travelling back to Renaissance Italy to channel an ancient assassin? These are all made possible through the wonders of mixed reality, where the real world meets the computer-generated one.

The Meta Quest 3s is a more affordable take on the headset that has made such far-fetched scenarios truly realistic. The Tribe XR DJ Academy, Mission ISS Quest and Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR apps are just a few of the options in the huge library.

Cheaper, lightweight and aesthetically different, the 3S is an entryway into the world of mixed reality. While the more advanced Meta Quest 3 begins at £469, its new counterpart can be yours for £289. There is a different camera and sensor set-up, less storage, no audio jack and lower resolution picture — but these are not noticeable, and you can connect the headset to a speaker via Bluetooth to improve the audio quality.

You can still transform your bedroom into a virtual world, and the exclusive Breathable Facial Interface attachment keeps you cool during gaming sessions or workouts.

HP Victus 15L

Best for: budget desktop thrills

Desktop gaming PCs have had a bit of a makeover recently, moving from bulky towers festooned with lights and fans to something more sleek and almost sensible looking. The lights and fans are still present, however, but now gaming desktops can take up less space than they once did, and so are an ideal choice if you want a desktop PC for a bedroom corner.

This model from HP is an excellent budget choice, bearing a rare all-AMD combo of the Ryzen 5 5600G CPU and Radeon RX 6400 GPU in its default configuration, which you’re going to want to spec up a bit as the 256GB SSD it comes with is much too small for modern games.

Buy now £698.99, Very

Gigabyte AORUS G6X

Best for: a budget gaming laptop

This model from Gigabyte one-ups a lot of other laptops at this price-point by packing an RTX 4060 graphics chip instead of the weaker but cheaper RTX 4050. This gives it more pixel-pushing power, which is exactly what you want in a gaming machine, but still keeps it out of the kind of cost bracket where you start thinking about beefing up your home security to protect it.

The 16-inch screen is a nice size, and capable of a 165Hz refresh rate (many older screens top out at 60Hz) but you’ll probably want an external monitor to make the most of it. And like any gaming laptop, its battery life sinks fast once you start making it work hard.

Buy now £1050.00, Scan

Alienware Aurora R16

Best for: desktop thrills

If you want something a bit more reasonably priced, try a desktop PC. Though you will need to budget for things like monitors and keyboards (or reuse them from a previous PC), the fact the components don’t need to be miniaturised for use in a laptop can keep the cost down.

This model from Alienware - a brand owned by Dell - can give you Core i9s, RTX 4090s, and as much as 8TB of SSD storage, but if you’d rather not spend north of £4,000 you can tone it down a bit and get a games PC that will play the latest titles without causing your bank manager to have a fit. And even if 8TB is probably too much storage, 512GB is too little, so it’s always worth bumping that up a bit so that you don’t fill half of it with a single game.

Buy now £1019.00, Dell

Best Black Friday deals on gaming headsets

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless

An expensive wireless gaming headset, the Arctis Nova Pro offers broad connectivity, noise cancelling on both earcups and microphones, spatial audio compatibility, and an ingenious hot-swappable battery.

Probably best used to pinpoint enemies by their footsteps in games before gunning them down, but there is no reason why this can’t pull double duty between Call of Duty and your, um, duty to the boss over Teams.

Another all-black set that looks the part if you need to appear on video while wearing it, the earcups are covered on the outside with a magnetic panel that pops off to reveal a USB-C charging port on one side, and a removable battery on the other. It comes with two batteries, meaning you can have one on charge in the base station - which also manages connections and offers preset and EQ adjustment - while you use the other.

Soft, well-made and comfortable, the Arctis Nova Pro sounds great. It’s just a shame it’s so expensive.

Buy now £259.00, Amazon

HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless

Though the Cloud II Wireless might look a bit cheap, its battery life is what makes this headset stand out. Boasting 300 hours – are you kidding? That’s long enough to play for twelve and a half days consecutively before needing to charge it up.

Insane battery life aside (though that is, of course, a major plus), the headset features an aluminium frame with comfortable padding for the earphones, plus a detachable microphone, making it ideal for switching between multi- and single-player games. The buttons are all located in sensible, easy-to-reach places – the left ear cup features the mic, power button, mute button and charging port, while the right has a volume wheel.

Of course, this would mean nothing if the audio quality wasn’t up to snuff; fortunately, it is. This headset features 50mm neodymium dual-chambered drivers with two chambers (one for mid-high frequencies and one for low), which combine with the Ngenuity downloadable software (only available on PC) to create crystal-clear audio. It has got surround sound for days, and the USB-A wireless adapter means it connects easily to pretty much any console (though watch out: this is detachable and therefore easy to lose).

One of the main downsides here would have to be the microphone: the audio quality is disappointingly scratchy and tinny, not what you’d expect from a premium headset – despite featuring a bi-directional mic. But in every other way, it shines.

Buy now £139.97, Amazon

Razer Blackshark V2X

Best for: more affordable virtual surround sound

Very light but with 50mm drivers to pump out the sound, this wired gaming headset is a cut-down version of the Razer Blackshark V2, which costs twice as much. This means it’s a bit basic, lacking features like RGB lighting, a detachable mic, and even a tough braided cable, but they may be superfluous if all you’re looking for is something to transmit noise to and from your head.

You do, however, get 7.1 virtual surround sound and a bendable cardioid mic, along with a standard 3.5mm connector so you can plug it into just about anything.

Was: £59.99

Buy now £34.99, Amazon

Turtle Beach Stealth Pro

Few of the headsets on this list come with a price tag as hefty as the Stealth Pro – but don’t let that put you off. Turtle Beach’s newest entrant onto the market is a top-of-the-range set of cans that come with two different versions – one for Xbox players, and one for PlayStation ones.

Fortunately (with a headset as expensive as this), the controls are actually remarkably simple: power, Bluetooth, something called Superhuman Hearing (which lets you foreground certain noises, such as gunshots or footsteps - sneaky) and a wheel that lets you swap in pre-programmed player profiles via a connecting smartphone app.

In addition to all the bells and whistles: the sound (and especially surround sound) is great, and features ever-handy noise cancelling capabilities, which are surprisingly good for a gaming headset.

Helpfully, the battery is also decent: a full battery (there are two, which can be charged up and swapped out with the headset’s battery port) lasts 12 hours and even comes with a USB slot to charge your controllers. This is primarily a Bluetooth headset, with a range of about 15 metres.

There are downsides. The headset is a little small – for those with bigger heads (such as myself), this sat a little bit uncomfortably. Plus, the microphone isn’t the best as set into the ear cup, it sacrifices sound quality for subtlety. But in all other aspects, it shines.

Buy now £179.99, Amazon

Skullcandy PLYR Multi-Platform Wireless Gaming Headset

First thing first: Skullcandy’s PLYR headset might not be to everybody’s taste, but don’t let the exterior put you off. This is a seriously cool piece of kit, and at £129.99, actually a little cheaper than some of its direct rivals.

Putting the headset on, it’s comfortable: there are padded ear cups and the whole thing feels lightweight, which means I could wear this for hours on end without feeling the strain (though it does also feel worryingly breakable). There are several buttons on the headphones themselves, which are for the usual suspects: pausing, muting and skipping audio, as well as turning the wireless feature on and off (there is also a cable with which to connect to different consoles).

Audio-wise, the PLYR is decent: the sound quality is good, but the real hero of this element is the Skullcandy HQ app, which boasts an Enhanced Sound Perception add-on. Basically, this lets you customise the audio features to suit your personal preference via an in-depth hearing test at the start. There’s also built-in Tile integration, which is handy - the only shortfalling is the Supreme Sound element, which can feel a little bit too aggressive at times, and can’t be turned off.

The audio quality is surprisingly good, and features built-in AI to boost it still further. Again, the mic is detachable here: a huge relief, especially given that it’s rather stiff and tends to stick out in front of the face in an awkward way.

Buy now £89.99, Amazon

Epos H3

Best for: a good all-rounder

At the time of writing, this is an absolute bargain, and definitely one to look out for during sales and discount events. With a stainless steel slider and adjustable earcups to tailor the fit for just about anyone’s head, the H3 headset offers an excellent mic and well-balanced sound, whether you’re using it for gaming or music.

The mic isn’t detachable, which may affect its versatility as you don’t always want a boom sticking out, but with a volume wheel integrated into the right earcup, and a standard 3.5mm plug meaning it can be connected to just about anything, this is a headset that will please many users.

Buy now £23.99, Amazon

Razer Kraken Kitty V2 Pro

Best for: kitties

Available in a wonderful pink as well as Razer’s trademark black and green, and with light-up ears, this headset is going to get you noticed if you’re playing on camera or at a tournament. Alternatively, it may just make you feel great about yourself.

It is quite expensive, but the reasonably long 2m cable, 50mm drivers and cardioid pattern mic make it a versatile performer that can be connected to multiple sources. Did we mention that the cat ears can be swapped for bunny and bear ears too?

Buy now £129.99, Amazon

Best Black Friday gaming accessory deals

Razer Basilisk V3

Best for: a comfortable game

This right-handed mouse has the classic gaming mouse shape, with a thumb rest on the left that’s positioned directly under some of the 11 programmable buttons. It’s another super-fast 25,000 DPI sensor underneath, which is so high you’ll probably never use it, and the overall design is long rather than wide, meaning it sits comfortably in your palm.

It’s heavier than the Logitech G502 X, and has Razor’s trademark green lighting on-board, but it’s an excellent gaming mouse with all the benefits of the wired connection.

Was: £79.98

Buy now £45.93, Amazon

Logitech G203 Lightsync

Best for: wired simplicity

Logitech makes an awful lot of gaming peripherals, and sorting through its collection of mice can take a while. This one stands out not only because of its price tag, but also due to the three zones of RGB lighting it contains, which can display up to 16.8 million colours while you’re playing.

This isn’t to everyone’s taste, and takes a moment to set up in the Logitech app (and sync it across other compatible Logitech products) if you don’t want it flashing away on its default settings, but there's plenty more to admire about the mouse, including its six programmable buttons, 8,000 DPI laser sensor, and the simplicity of the wired USB connection.

Buy now £24.99, Amazon

Cooler Master MM720

Best for: claw grippers

The way you hold your mouse can define how you play games, and some prefer a claw-like grip rather than one that places the palm over the top of the mouse's body. This model from Cooler Master caters to those who prefer the claw, offering a rounded honeycomb body that’s ideal for holding between your fingers.

It’s wired, with a 16000 DPI optical sensor and weighs just 49 grams. There's some RGB lighting, and it’s certified IP58 against water and dust ingress.

Turtle Beach React-R Controller Black

Turtle Beach’s Recon controller has some excellent features but a higher price - almost as much as the official Xbox controller - so this cheaper wired option is good to see from the firm.

You get a lot for your money here, with two remappable buttons underneath the controller where you can reach them with your fingertips, and an all-round premium feel from the ergonomic, grippy plastic construction. There are audio controls built into the top of the gamepad, allowing you to mute your headset mic or activate Turtle Beach’s ‘Superhuman Hearing’ audio enhancer.

Buy now £29.99, Amazon

Xbox Wireless Controller

Best for: purists

The official Xbox controller goes for about £55, but you can often pick it up for less. It’s a great all-rounder, is wireless, and you’ll have the advantage of knowing you’re using a first-party item that’s probably not going to go wrong in an interesting way. It uses plain old AA batteries, from which you can get about 44 hours of use, and it will hook up to a PC via Bluetooth too. Microsoft’s pad might not be exciting, but it’s got years of development behind it, and can feel great to use.

Buy now £49.99, Amazon

AOC Gaming 24G2SAE - 24 Inch FHD Gaming Monitor

This 27-inch, 1080p VA screen offers an excellent 165Hz refresh rate for the price, and comes with LED backlighting for an evenly lit picture.

If that refresh rate isn’t enough, you can switch the screen into a Low Input Lag mode that prioritises its response time, while for the best quality visuals, you can synchronise its refresh rate with your graphics card using AMD’s Freesync Premium adaptive sync tech. With a peak brightness of 350 nits and a pair of 2W speakers built-in, this beats a lot of other budget screens.

Was: £162.99

Buy now £129.00, Amazon

MSI G27CQ4 E2

Best for: gaming immersion

This 27-inch curved monitor is more expensive than many on this list, but shows you what you get if you step up the price hierarchy a bit. Its refresh rate is 170Hz, making for lightning-fast response times, and the curved screen, along with its extremely thin bezel, gives the impression of being enveloped in your game, increasing the feeling of immersion.

It has a 10-bit colour display gamut, an LED backlight, and a VA panel making it all work. The brightness of 250 nits might be surpassed elsewhere, but with the lights down low and the sound turned up, this screen can really bring you into the game.

Buy now £158.99, Amazon

Brazen Puma

A good budget choice, the Puma is a smaller chair but gives you the classic gaming chair look, with holes punched through either side of the neck area to let through whatever needs to be let through. Upholstered with foam and a mixture of mesh and pleather, it may not have the executive feel of a Herman Miller, but that matters less when you look at the difference in price tags. The Puma is sturdy, supportive and easy to build - though slightly shorter than many other chairs, so particularly tall gamers might like to try something else out.

Still, the stitching and materials are good quality, and there’s enough tilt in the back to offer leaning as an additional seating position, if not a full recline.

The marketplace for chairs at this price point is a highly competitive one, with major furniture suppliers such as Ikea getting involved. The Puma certainly looks the part, and with its polyurethane-leather finish, is one of the best budget gaming chairs you’ll come across.

Buy now £141.48, Amazon

Brazen Phantom Elite Gaming Chair

Another budget model that punches above its weight in terms of comfort, the Phantom Elite is ergonomically designed according to the racing-car-seat template, and covered in the polyurethane leather-like substance that’s very common on seats in this price bracket.

We’re not sure about the bright colours of the branding against the black of the PU finish, but as you’ll have your back to it most of the time, it’s probably an unnecessary worry. They’re certainly bright colours, with the ‘pink’ choice (more like a scarlet red) being the nicest of the bunch, with the yellow-and-white option reminding us most of a racing livery.

The armrests are a bit rattly, but can be adjusted for height or rotation. The steel frame makes the chair feel well built, and there’s some lovely diamond stitching on the backrest. The combination of foam padding and PU leather keeps you cool, and there are removable cushions for your head and lower back. It’s a good combination at a nice price.

Destiny 2

Best for: multiplayer shooting

This could have been Apex Legends, Fortnite or Warframe - free-to-play shooters that allow you to team up and find something to blaze away at. Destiny 2 is riding a wave at the time of writing, however, as it has just seen the release of an expansion pack, The Final Shape, which has added content and modified the way the game works to make it the best it has ever been.

It may take you a long time to work your way through to the new stuff, however, but there's enough here to keep you busy for weeks without having to pay, and that’s the best thing you can say about a bargain game.

Buy now £2.49, CDKeys

Elden Ring

Elden Ring has a score of 96 on 100 on Metacritic, which is also the highest ever for PS5 games, has sold 12 million copies within the first two weeks of its release, and is all that users in the gaming community seem to talk about even months later. While it’s not perfect, it easily makes its way to this list.

The game’s world-building has been conceived by legendary Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin. Additionally, it has been co-written and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, who is responsible for the creation of some of From Software’s best RPGs (role-playing games) such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

Elden Ring is a complete game, as it caters to multiple user playstyles. While some prefer close-range fights, others may feel that magic is a more suitable means to an end. The game has great visuals and a colour scheme that is more generous than From Software’s previous games. Additionally, some of the enemy designs are equally creepy and stunning.

Elden Ring can at times feel overwhelming for those who are newer to video gaming, thanks to its extremely challenging bosses and lengthy playtime. But it is not a game to be devoured in one go - it is a gift that keeps giving.

The Last of Us Parts One and Two Remastered

Best for: top-quality writing

Two games really, but the story of Ellie and Joel and their journey through a mournful, ruined world populated by fungus-infected zombies and angry survivors of a civilisation-ending pandemic is one story. Adapted by HBO for its streaming service, The Last of Us is a great story that features some of the best writing in video games, and if you can take the violence and horror at its heart is a tale that will stay with you once experienced.

Crucial T705

Best for: pure speed

This immensely fast M.2 drive uses the latest PCIe 5.0 interface to boost its read speed to a massive 13,600MB/s. You’ll pay for the privilege of having one of the fastest SSDs out there, though, and will require a cutting-edge motherboard that supports the technology. It comes with a heatsink to help prevent thermal throttling, offers up to 4TB of storage capacity, and is ideal for high-speed gaming and data-heavy AI applications. It’s extremely expensive though, and unless you’re going to make the most of its fearsome speed you may be just as happy with a slower (and cheaper) PCIe 4.0 model.
