5 best Dyson fans, tested and compared by an expert

With their bladeless design and powerful airflow, Dyson’s range of fans are hard to beat - (Joanne Lewsley/The Independent)

There’s something undeniably satisfying about switching on one of the best Dyson fans when the temperature starts to climb. They’re powerful, beautifully designed and, crucially for me as a hot sleeper, quiet enough to run all night. After testing several Dyson fans back-to-back, one thing became clear: while they might look similar, they definitely don’t perform the same.

To properly put the fans through their paces, I used an anemometer to measure airflow and a decibel meter to track noise levels, both at a consistent 1m distance, alongside real-world testing during warm days and sticky nights. I also used a plug-in power meter to check wattage levels at the highest settings.

My standout favourite ended up being the Dyson Cool AM07 (£350, Currys.co.uk), which strikes that perfect balance between powerful cooling and whisper-quiet performance, without overcomplicating things. Don’t worry, though - if air purification, heating or humidification is your bag, I’ve covered standout models with those features in my roundup too.

The challenge is that Dyson’s range has expanded significantly in recent years, with a mix of designs, sizes and capabilities, and many of them at eye-watering prices compared with other fans. So which Dyson fans are actually worth it? I’ve tested the latest key models across the range to find out.

Dyson cool AM07 tower fan

Rating: 5/5

Best: dyson fan overall

Type: Tower fan

Noise (tested at top speed): 49dB

Speed settings: 10

Oscillation: Up to 70 degrees

Dimensions: 100.7 cm × 19 cm × 11 cm

Weight: 2.8kg

Timer: 15 minutes to 9 hours

Controls: Magnetic remote control

Why we love it

  • Smooth, powerful airflow
  • Impressively quiet in use
  • Sleek, easy-to-clean bladeless design
  • Magnetic remote stores neatly on top

Take note

  • No app or voice control
  • No sleep mode

As someone who sleeps hot and lives beside a noisy pub, I’m picky about bedroom fans: they need to be powerful enough to make a difference, but quiet enough not to become yet another sleep disturbance. In testing, the Dyson cool AM07 struck that balance brilliantly. The best Dyson fan I tested, it delivered a smooth, steady stream of air that quickly cooled my bedroom, without the choppy, buffeting blast you often get from cheaper fans.

I was impressed by the quiet but powerful nature of this fan (Joanne Lewsley/The Independent)

What really sets it apart is how refined it feels in use. Dyson has engineered this model with a Helmholtz silencer, which helps reduce noise by up to 60 per cent compared with earlier models, and it showed during testing – even at higher speeds, the sound is more of a soft “whoosh” than an intrusive hum. On lower settings, it faded into the background far better than many rivals I’ve tested.

Design-wise, it’s slim and light enough to move around easily by the base, and the bladeless loop is not only safer but far easier to clean than traditional grille fans. The signature Dyson magnetic remote clips neatly onto the top, so it doesn’t get lost.

At 56W on its highest setting, it’s not the most energy-efficient Dyson in my guide, but it’s relatively energy-efficient for a tower fan with this level of airflow. The main drawback is the price, and the lack of app or voice control feels like a missed opportunity at this level. Still, if you want a stylish, low-maintenance fan that cools effectively and won’t keep you awake, this is one of Dyson’s strongest options.

Dyson cool CF1

Rating: 4/5

Best: Dyson desk fan

Type: Desk fan

Noise (tested at top speed): 29dB

Speed settings: 10, plus night mode

Oscillation: Up to 70 degrees

Dimensions: 55 cm× 36cm × 36 cm

Weight: 1.8 kg

Timer: 30 minutes to 8 hours

Controls: Touch control panel and magnetic remote

Why we love it

  • Quiet enough for overnight use
  • Lightweight
  • Pleasant airflow
  • Magnetic remote stores on top

Take note

  • No smart features or app control
  • No vertical oscillation

If you’re after something compact, the Dyson cool CF1 is one of the best Dyson desk fan I tested. Despite its size, cooling is impressively effective. The airflow feels pleasant and it cooled my warm lounge within minutes. It’s also exceptionally quiet, particularly on its lowest setting, and even at full speed it isn’t too disruptive.

This is Dyson’s most discreet device (Joanne Lewsley/The Independent)

At just 1.8kg, it’s easy to move around your home with just one hand, and it sits comfortably on a desk or bedside table without dominating the space. Controls are refreshingly simple, too. There’s no app or smart features here, but the magnetic remote easily clips onto the top of the unit, which is genuinely handy and means you’re not constantly hunting for it.

Using my power meter plug to record wattage during use, the cool CF1 clocked in at just 22.5W on its highest setting, making it pretty energy-efficient and a good choice for overnight use without worrying about running costs.

Unlike some of Dyson’s more advanced models, you won’t find air purification or humidification features on the cool CF1. Plus, you can’t tilt it, which slightly limits positioning. But if you want a straightforward, well-designed fan that’s quiet, safe and easy to use, this is a strong option, particularly for small spaces.

Dyson purifier cool PC1

Rating: 4/5

Best: Dyson fan for allergies

Type: Tower fan and air purifier

Noise (tested at top speed): 43dB

Speed settings: 10 + auto and night mode

Oscillation: Up to 350 degrees

Dimensions: 105cm x 22cm x 22cm

Weight: 4.72kg

Timer: 15 minutes to 9 hours

Controls: Remote control, MyDyson app and voice control

Why we love it

  • Effective at cooling large spaces
  • Auto mode responds to changes in air quality
  • Lightweight

Take note

  • Can't control via touch panel

If you like the idea of cleaner as well as cooler air, the Dyson purifier cool PC1 is the best Dyson fan for allergies that I tested. Thanks to 350-degree oscillation, cooling is powerful and makes a real difference in larger rooms compared with more fixed-position fans. It shifts air quickly without feeling overly harsh, and I found it took the edge off stuffy spaces in just minutes.

The air purification makes this model stand out (Joanne Lewsley/The Independent)

Where it really stands out, though, is air quality. Auto mode continuously monitors the room and ramps up purification when needed. During a candle-smoke test, I could see the fan respond in real time, with the digital display showing pollutants being cleared. It’s particularly reassuring if you suffer from allergies, especially in summer when pollen levels spike.

It’s noticeably lighter than some of Dyson’s bulkier models, and in testing I found it easy to lift one-handed – ideal if you’re moving it between a bedroom and living space.

You can control the fan using the MyDyson, which adds a layer of convenience if you want to check air quality remotely or set schedules. At 29.5W on its highest setting, it’s relatively energy efficient too.

While it’s quieter than many fans, it’s not completely silent at full blast. But for a well-rounded cooling and purifying Dyson fan, it’s one of the most practical options I tested.

Dyson purifier humidify+cool PH2 De-NOx

Rating: 4/5

Best: Dyson fan for large homes

Type: Tower fan, air purifier and humidifier

Noise (tested at top speed): 45dB

Speed settings: 10, plus auto and night mode

Oscillation: Up to 90 degrees

Dimensions: 92.3cm x 31.2 cm

Weight: 8.12kg

Timer: 15 minutes to 9 hours

Controls: Remote control, MyDyson app

Why we love it

  • Excellent at cooling big rooms
  • Quiet, even at higher speeds
  • Excellent app with detailed air-quality data
  • Magnetic remote neatly stores on the unit

Take note

  • Large and quite bulky
  • Expensive compared with standard fans

If you’re short on space (or patience) for multiple appliances, the Dyson purifier humidify+cool PH2 De-NOx makes a strong case for being your all-in-one solution. It’s the best Dyson fan I tested for large homes, cooling a spacious room in my home quickly and evenly, without a harsh blast. Impressively, even at its highest setting, it stayed relatively quiet, making it a good option for bedrooms or home offices.

This is a do-it-all fan (Joanne Lewsley/The Independent)

But cooling is only part of the story. This model also purifies and humidifies, with a HEPA and carbon filter designed to capture pollutants, including NO₂ from cooking and heating. The MyDyson app is also genuinely useful, offering detailed, real-time insights into air quality, humidity and temperature.

There are 10 speed settings, plus auto and night modes, and switching between them is seamless via the app or magnetic remote, which clips onto the machine so it doesn’t get lost. It’s a small detail, but one that makes daily use feel that bit more considered (and cuts down on swearing in our house). At 40W on its highest setting, it’s surprisingly energy-efficient too, especially considering it’s cooling, purifying, and humidifying all at once.

The downside is its size – it’s fairly bulky and not something you can easily tuck out of sight. I personally found it far too heavy to lug from room to room, especially when the water tank was full. But if you’re looking for a multifunctional appliance that goes beyond basic cooling and something you can use year-round, this is a seriously capable option.

Dyson purifier hot+cool HP2 De-NOx

Rating: 4/5

Best: dyson fan for year-round use

Type: Tower fan, heater and air purifier

Noise (tested at top speed): 44dB

Speed settings: 10, plus auto and night mode

Oscillation: Up to 350 degrees

Dimensions: 76.4cm x 24.8cm

Weight: 5.5kg

Timer: 15 minutes to 9 hours

Controls: Remote control, MyDyson app and voice control

Why we love it

  • Excellent at cooling
  • Wide oscillation for full-room coverage
  • Enhanced carbon filter

Take note

  • Very pricey
  • Heavy to lift
  • High energy use when heating

If you’re looking for the best Dyson fan for year-round use, the Dyson purifier hot+cool HP2 De-NOx makes a strong case. You get cooling, heating and air purification in a single, beautifully engineered unit, so you don’t need to pack it away once the summer ends.

The HP2 upgrade removes higher levels of Nitrogen dioxide with its K-Carbon filter (Joanne Lewsley/The Independent)

In use, it delivers the kind of performance you’d expect from Dyson. Cooling is smooth and evenly distributed, while the wide 350-degree oscillation helps it to efficiently cover large spaces. The handy MyDyson app lets you adjust airflow, set schedules, and dive into real-time and historical air-quality data.

What stands out compared with earlier Dyson models is the filtration. Here you get an enhanced K-Carbon filter designed to remove higher levels of NO₂ and other gaseous pollutants. In contrast, the Dyson HP1 (which I also tested, but didn’t include here) uses a standard activated carbon filter. It’s a useful upgrade if you’re concerned about indoor air quality from cooking, traffic pollution or heating.

That versatility does come with trade-offs. While cooling is energy efficient at around 24.5W, heating is far more power-hungry (more than 2,000W), so it’s something you’ll definitely notice on your energy bills in winter. It’s also fairly heavy, so it's not ideal if you plan to move it between rooms regularly.

Still, if you want one appliance that can heat, cool and clean your air with minimal fuss - and you have deep pockets - this is one of the most best all-rounders from Dyson I’ve tested.

What is the best Dyson fan?

If you’re simply looking for a Dyson fan that cools brilliantly without overcomplicating things, the Dyson cool AM07 is my pick. It strikes that sweet spot between powerful airflow and whisper-quiet performance, making it ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and those sticky summer nights when you just need reliable cooling.

It doesn’t purify, humidify or connect to an app - but that’s kind of the point. This is a fan that focuses on doing one job exceptionally well, and for most people, that’s exactly what you want.

At the other end of the scale, the Dyson cool CF1 is ideal if you’re short on space. It’s compact, lightweight and impressively quiet, making it perfect for desks or bedside tables. You don’t get the same whole-room reach as the AM07, but for personal cooling, it’s one of the easiest Dyson fans to live with day to day.

How the best Dyson fans were tested

I tested each Dyson fan at home over several weeks. As someone who runs hot at night (and often can’t open the windows), I focused on how quickly each model cooled a room, how the airflow felt in practice, and whether it was comfortable to sleep with.
