Apple iPhone 16
The latest iPhone has landed on virtual shelves, and with it comes the annual dilemma for Apple loyalists - is it worth spending the best part of four figures to upgrade our current handset?
Year-to-year, the advancements feel minimal, especially with the anticipated artificial intelligence features delayed till October - but there are developments worth noting. First and foremost (and to the delight of high screen time users), the quartet of 16 handsets have bigger batteries and longer battery lives. The progressed A18 chip promises faster processing and there are new buttons. The customisable Action Button shortcut from the 15 is available on the full 16 family and is joined by the viral touchpad-like Camera Control. With differing pressure or by swiping, it will open the camera, take pictures, adjust shooting modes or zoom.
Experts agree the Cupertino-based tech giant has closed the gap between its standard iPhone 16 model and the Pro. The latter is known for its souped-up cameras – namely the additional telephoto lens, performance boost and higher refresh rate.
Both handsets have a 48MP Fusion camera and have experienced an improvement in picture-taking through added vibrancy and contrast and clearer images in low-light photography. Unlike the pared-back Pros, the 16 comes in an array of bright and bold colourways; pink, teal, blue, white or black. For scrolling, note-taking and holiday snapping, the base iPhone 16 does the job and does it well.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max (256 GB)
During the ‘Wonderlust’ showcase, we were shown a new design for the phone, namely a colour-infused back glass with a matte, textured finish and a more contoured edge. All devices come with a 48MP main camera while the more advanced Pro and Pro Max models have the added bonus of a 2x Telephoto option for 3x optical zoom.
There has also been a switch-up in the charging port to the widely used USB-C and greater precision for Find My Friends and Roadside Assistance connected via satellite to suit those off the grid. The phones are available in five new colours; pink, yellow, green, blue, and black.
It also has a slightly bigger battery: Apple says the Pro Max can handle a staggering 29 hours of video playback, while the Pro can manage a respectable 23 hours.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro, 128GB
Apple saved the best upgrades for the iPhone 15 Pro lineup. Firstly, there’s the titanium design, making them lighter but just as strong as their predecessors. Whereas other iPhones come in stainless steel.
Under the hood, the A17 Pro chip is the fastest smartphone processor on the market if you believe Apple. Even the phone’s minor improvements could pay off, like the action button that replaces the mute switch and offers quick access to apps and tools.

Apple iPhone 15 (256 GB)
The standard iPhone 15 boasts several noticeable upgrades over the iPhone 14: a USB-C port, an interactive screen cutout instead of a plain notch, and an improved chip and 48MP camera borrowed from last year’s iPhone 14 Pro. The last of those is especially significant as the iPhone 14 had a 12MP main camera.
As usual, Apple is promising even better-zoomed shots, low-light snaps, and stabilisation across video and stills. Notably, the iPhone’s screen is also twice as bright outdoors, which should make it a lot clearer when it is sunny.
Looks-wise, the iPhone 15 has squared-off edges compared to the more rounded curves of its predecessor. All told, it offers a substantial jump over the iPhone 14 and should wipe the floor with even older models.

Apple iPhone 14 (256 GB)
As with its previous iPhone 13 offering, Apple has released not one, but four different handsets under its latest iteration. This time, it’s the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max with pre-orders now available across the whole range.
While the Super Retina XDR display is not new to the iPhone, this model comes with a brightness of up to 2,000 nits. For context, that’s 1,200 nits more than its predecessor. And according to Apple, no other smartphone is as bright.
As to be expected of a flagship phone, the 14 comes with a longer battery life than its predecessors. Apple says this handset offers up to 20 hours of video playback.

Apple Watch Series 10 GPS, 42mm, Aluminium Case, Sport Band
The latest Apple Watch Series 10 is on sale. It’s not a huge discount (just £20) but if you are looking to upgrade your current model, there is no better time. A decade in the making, the smart time-teller has a bigger display, while being slimmer and lighter. It boasts all the smart functions that you would expect - health insights, texts and calls - but now with greater water resistance and a better battery life.

Apple Watch SE
The budget Watch, though that’s always a relative term with Apple products, the 2022 SE uses the same basic chipset as the Series 8, and has most of its features, but cuts back on the sensors. You don’t get the 8’s blood oxygen sensor, ECG or temperature sensors, and the case is a mixture of aluminium and plastic available in 40mm and 44mm variants.
It’s still a capable smartwatch, however, with plenty of fitness tracking capabilities, and with enough water resistance to make it a good choice for swimmers. All the available bands will fit it too, so you’re not missing out.

Apple Watch Series 9
Since the first Apple Watch in 2015, its overall design-brief has barely flickered – a rectangular display with curved corners and a digital crown that rotates to scroll menus, or that can be pressed to open apps. There’s also a flush side-button to launch Apple Pay.
The Series 9 looks identical to last year’s, though one new colour is added to the range: a feisty pastel pink. Apart from that, it’s visually unchanged from the previous two models. The gently curved glass smoothly connects to the metal case, enhancing the idea that the Watch is all-screen. This was introduced in Series 7 and remains practical and elegant.
Case sizes are 41mm or 45mm, with a choice of aluminium or stainless-steel finish. The steel versions are pricier and include cellular connectivity by default, to avoid relying on a paired iPhone, plus toughened sapphire-crystal glass. The aluminium Watches offer cellular connection as an option and use Ion-X glass which still does the job pretty well.
The S9 brings several performance boosts, some of which are exclusive to the Series 9 or Ultra 2 models. Chief among these is double tap. You simply tap your index finger and thumb together twice to get the Watch to, for instance, take a phone call if your hands are full. You can snooze but not cancel an alarm with it, which is probably for the best.

Apple Airpods Pro
These have rapidly become the baseline against which other earbuds are judged, such is their prevalence among iPhone users. Airpods have improved greatly since their first iteration, and the Pro variant now sports noise cancellation, IPX4 sweat resistance, and replaceable tips so you can get the fit just right.
Battery life is one of the Pros’ weaker elements, with 6 hours quoted when using noise cancellation. This tech takes its toll on every pair we tried, but on the Airpods Pro, it seems particularly bad. Perhaps it’s the slim and svelte design of the buds, leaving little room to cram in batteries. The charging case is a good one with 30 hours of playback, and powering up the ‘Pods for an hour’s use from just five minutes in the case. Sound is balanced with good bass, and is distinctly superior to that from cheaper earbuds.

Apple iPad 10th generation
Unsurprisingly, the Apple iPad is one of the most expensive tablets on this list, but if you’re looking for something that will appeal to older kids, tweens and teens, you can’t go wrong. It’s a great tool both for catching up on films and games and getting down to the serious business of learning – pair it with an Apple Pencil and Apple Keyboard and it transforms into a mini laptop, making it great for homework and creative projects.
If you happen to be an Apple household, it will also pair up with the other devices in your home and will grow with your child, who has most likely been coveting your own iPad and iPhone for years. The downsides are that as it’s not explicitly designed to be child-friendly, adding parental controls isn’t quite as seamless as on other devices and since iPads are definitely not drop-proof, you’ll need to invest in a sturdy case to ensure it stays in one piece.

Apple MacBook Air 13in (M3)

The king of battery life right now, though upcoming Windows laptops using Snapdragon processors could topple it, the basic M3 model of the 13in MacBook Air is all the laptop you might need if your tastes don’t run to heavy 3D work or extremely high-resolution images. It brings many of the benefits of the MacBook Pro in a slimmer shell, shaves just an inch off the screen and looks great when you’re using it even though the Apple logo on the lid no longer lights up.

Apple AirTag (4 pack)
The Apple AirTag is round like a coin and finished in always-appealing minimalist stainless steel and white. It measures as measly 31.9 x 8.0mm and weighs in at an almost imperceptible 11g, meaning that once ensconced in a keychain and attached to your precious things, you’ll never really notice it’s there at all.
It should be made crystal clear that this Bluetooth tracker ONLY works in conjunction with other Apple products, so if you’re into Android or any other still-existing alternative OS, this is not the tracker for you. But what it does give to those armed with Apple tech is a stunningly accurate way to reunite yourself with stuff that’s gone astray. It does this in three ways: firstly you can ‘ping’ tagged items using the Bluetooth connection between your Apple device and your AirTag. Simply open the Find My app and activate the AirTag’s built in speaker to play a sound that lets you track it down by simply following the noise. You can also activate this via Siri, if you’re feeling particularly lazy, but the bottom line is, if your tagged item is within Bluetooth range, your AirTag will make noise until you find it.
If pinging isn’t your thing, Precision Finding can point the way using on-screen arrows and directions as to the precise location of your AirTag – particularly useful if your ears are somewhat unreliable.
Finally, if one of your prized possessions is lost way beyond the reach of Bluetooth, the Apple AirTag ups its game. Utilising the entire Find My network a secure signal can be sent out over Bluetooth and detected by nearby devices in the Find My network that are in range. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud, from where you can view it on the Find My app map. And there it is, ready to collect. What’s more, the whole process is anonymous and encrypted, so nobody need ever know about either the momentarily lost item.

Apple Pencil, 2nd Generation, Matte White
Sleek and stylish, the Apple Pencil is the priciest stylus on the market – which hardly comes as a surprise given the brand’s track record. Nevertheless, we’re big fans of its user-friendliness and seamless design. With the newest generation, you can wirelessly charge the Apple Pencil simply by magnetically clipping it to the side of your iPad and plugging your iPad in to charge as normal.
Crafted to feel like a real pencil in terms of size, shape and grip, the hyper-sensitive and precise technology makes writing, note-taking and drawing an absolute breeze. What’s more, with this upgraded model, you can double-tap the pencil to change brush sizes or tools. Double taps can also be customised depending on your most frequently used tools. Pressure sensitivity also means that you can press harder onto the touch screen for thicker lines, and ease up on the pressure for thinner ones and the precision nib allows you to make single-pixel changes to your work – so it's a brilliant tool for editing photos.

Apple TV 4K
The Apple TV 4K is a no-brainer for anyone enmeshed in the Apple ecosystem, with a host of Apple-friendly features that allow for colour calibration through an iPhone or multi-pair for your AirPods.
But this is more than just an Apple box – with 4K HDR, 60fps playback and a polished Siri remote, using the Apple TV 4K feels truly slick and elite, especially but not exclusively for those who are already using a host of Apple services. High Frame Rate HDR is a boon for keeping sports matches looking crisp and smooth, too.
Just keep in mind that only iOS users will get the most out of this model, and that you’re largely paying more than the other streaming sticks on this list.

Beats Fit Pro
Showing the influence of parent company Apple, these are great all-rounders and very reasonably priced. Somehow, Dr Dre’s clever engineers have managed to squeeze enough battery for six hours with active noise cancelling on or up to 24 hours with the charging case that is compact and sleek. There are no awkward stalks or bits that stick out and make you look like an alien. Instead, they taper gracefully.
Tips in three sizes mean you can get a good fit, and there’s enough waterproofing to survive a workout or a walk in the rain. The on-device controls allow you to manage calls, control music and be voice-activated. Sound is a mixed bag. It’s generally fine, but when the bass is pumping the mids get squeezed, while the treble is overblown. Customers can enjoy six months of Apple Music for free with each purchase.

Powerbeats Pro
The Powerbeats Pro from Beats are a popular choice for very good reason. Setting up your Beats is fuss-free - they automatically pair with your phone, without having to install an app.
For me, these were the comfiest running headphones on the list - the over-ear loop means they have a secure fit, without being too firm. They’re also easy to use, with easy to reach buttons for play/pause and changing the volume.
The quality of sound is as superior as you’d expect, and although they don’t have a noise-cancelling option, I actually preferred having a bit of sound let in while out running. The battery will last for nine hours out of the case, and 24 hours with the charging case, but not everyone will love how bulky the charging case is.
