Bernardo Celtic transfer fee reportedly half of what was once expected

New information has come to light regarding Celtic's ongoing pursuit of last-season-loanee Paulo Bernardo

Celtic and the player himself appear keen on making the 22-year-old's stay in Glasgow more permanent, following the Portuguese midfielder's contributions throughout the 2023/24 campaign – so much so, that a deal was seemingly 'close' earlier this week

Now, more details of the proposed transfer have surfaced which suggest the fee parent club Benfica is looking for could be far less than the estimated ~£6 million price tag first touted towards the end of last season.

As reported in the Daily Mail's print publication (via 67Hail Hail), Celtic are now expected to offer £3 million upfront, with £500,000-worth of add-ons bringing the total transfer fee to £3.5 million.

The Daily Mail also reports a sell-on clause will be inserted into the agreement, and that "sources close to the player" are confident both the player and the club can reach an agreement.

As discussed on The Celtic Way's morning briefing today, this fee for Bernardo feels like a sensible one for all involved – which could serve as a springboard for Celtic's subsequent transfer dealings when the summer transfer window opens. Watch that in full here:
