Bernalillo County commissioners voted unanimously on Oct. 14 to declare a state of emergency over fentanyl, after overdose deaths in the county rose from 299 in 2024 to 314 in 2025, according to state Department of Health figures cited by the Albuquerque Journal. The county includes Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest city.
The declaration lets the county tap additional money, gives the county manager emergency powers, and formally asks the state for help, KUNM reported. Officials have not said how much will be spent or where the money will come from.
