Berlin banned river swimming a century ago. Locals are bringing it back

A century after Berliners were barred from swimming in the Spree due to dangerous pollution levels, a movement is underway to reclaim the river for recreational use.

On Tuesday, approximately 200 people plunged into the Spree's sluggish, green-tinged waters to demonstrate its cleanliness and suitability for swimming. The event took place in the historic Mitte neighbourhood, near the renowned Museum Island.
