Captain Dan Bentley has confirmed his representatives are in early talks with the club over the possibility of extending his contract.
The Bristol City goalkeeper's current deal expires in the summer of 2023, raising uncertainty as to whether the No1 will remain at the club beyond the season or risk losing him for nothing in 12-month's time.
Bentley, 28, found himself out of the side before Christmas until an injury to back-up stopper Max O'Leary saw him come back into the team following a two-month stint on the bench.
Since then, the keeper has had the bit between his teeth and his determination to hold onto the shirt has seen him string together a number of fine performances including two clean sheets in his last three appearances.
Earlier in the season, Bentley was quizzed on his contract situation where he claimed no talks have taken place and it was down to the club to make their move to extend his stay.
However, there have since been developments with Bentley admitting preliminary talks are going on in the background to extend his three-year stay at Ashton Gate.
Speaking ahead of the Huddersfield match, he said: "There have been lines of communication, my agents are very receptive.
"They've got a good relationship with the club and they've had dialogue but nothing has been agreed as of yet but we're very much open to discussion.
"As it stands I've still got a year left here so as far as I'm aware, I'm not going anywhere so we'll have to wait and see."
Bentley did reiterate his desire to achieve his goal of playing in the Premier League in the future and hopes he will be able to succeed playing in the colours of Bristol City. But he pointed out the unpredictability of football contracts, admitting circumstances that change in the blink of an eye.
"It's very unpredictable. I often explain this to people who aren't football-minded, people who I know, and people who I meet," he added.
"They seem to think that once you move somewhere that's it, that's how things work but I have to explain that football is a very volatile sport. It's very cut-throat and things can change very, very quickly depending on opinions, on contract situations and what a player wants and needs.
"All these contributing factors that come into the position of a player in terms of contracts. Like I said before, I'm happy here. I'm motivated to play in the Premier League. I came here to play in the Premier League and I felt that the club were ambitious to go and achieve that.
"That's something that hasn't changed and there's that burning desire for me to play in the Premier League. That's where I sit now, I'm contracted next year and I'm looking forward to it."
Pearson has openly declared he has held conversations with his players ahead of the summer and informed those that are not part of his plans that they need to look elsewhere.
Asked whether Bentley has had any reassurances that the No1 jersey is his next season, he said: "I don't need reassurances that I'm going to be number one. The reassurances come from my performances and if I give him no reason to take me out of the team and my performances are good... if he takes me out of the team I'll be the first person to knock on his door and that's how I work.
"I haven't had discussions with him about my future, I don't need to.
"I would imagine he would look at my contract status and sees that it doesn't expire this year so there is no desperate need for me and him to have a meeting. I've got a good relationship with him and I'd be the first to go in and sit down and hear what he would have to say."
One other player whose contract developments are a lot further down the line is Timm Klose. The Swiss defender revealed in a Q&A how his friendship with Bentley remains one of the strongest amongst the squad.
Klose is out of contract at the end of June and despite a deal being on the table, the veteran has yet to put pen-to-paper to extend his stay.
Bentley, who may have dropped a bombshell that Klose's partner is pregnant, believes the team will be a lot better off with the centre-back in it if he signs his contract.
He said: "I actually got his missus' number from my missus and they met up with the dogs over at Ashton Court a couple of weeks ago.
"Obviously she hadn't really met anyone with neither of them being from this area so our families get on well and obviously Timm's missus is expecting a baby so that's fantastic for him - I hope everyone knows that - I hope I haven't spoiled his news.
"I get on really well with him, he's a great lad, he's a weirdo too and I'm sure he won't mind me saying that," he joked.
"I seem to be attracted to weirdos: Timm and Tom Kalas are really strange people but I love them and I hope for our sake we'll be a richer place and a richer team with Timm here next year."
