Bengaluru's ancient rock older than dinosaurs and Himalayas: 3.4-billion-year-old Peninsular Gneiss in Lalbagh is among Earth's oldest exposed crust; formed before oxygen

Bengaluru’s Lalbagh Botanical Garden is home to a 3.4-billion-year-old Peninsular Gneiss rock, one of the oldest exposed sections of the Earth's crust anywhere on the planet. From surviving the early days of the planet to becoming a National Geological Monument, here is the story of the ancient rock that quietly stands amid Bengaluru’s modern cityscape.

The formation, known as the Peninsular Gneiss, stands inside Lalbagh Botanical Garden and has been declared a National Geological Monument by the Geological Survey of India. Most people who visit the garden walk past it without a second thought.
