BENGALURU: Margaret Alva, 80, the anti-BJP bloc’s candidate for vice-president, is among only a handful of women politicians in India who has such a wide range of experience, both as an elected representative and administrator.
Although born in Mangaluru in 1942 and christened Margaret Nazareth, Alva, a protege of late former chief minister D Devaraj Urs, has been a quintessential Bengalurean. An arts student of Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru, she made her mark as a brilliant debater and active participant in social events. Later, studying in Government Law College, Bengaluru, Alva took up practice while also pursuing social service.
