Bengaluru: 'Friend' cheats businessman of Rs 3 lakh

BENGALURU: A businessman filed a cheating case against a person who promised to start an apparel shop in partnership with him, and absconded after stealing over Rs 3 lakh cash.

Najrul Islam, 30, a resident of Gandhipura in Whitefield, told police he runs a hotel in Ramagondanahalli and met the suspect, who identified himself as Lal Mohammed Shaik, 10 days ago. The two became close and Shaik told Najrul to open an apparel shop in partnership with him. He asked Islam to arrange Rs 3 lakh and claimed he would invest Rs 5 lakh.

Islam asked him to take care of his hotel for a day on June 24, as he had to take his wife to hospital. Shaik agreed and sat at the cash counter. According to Islam, Shaik took Rs 2.8 lakh in cash and transferred Rs 30,000 via UPI using the hotel's mobile phone. Whitefield police have registered a case.
