BENGALURU: The state labour department’s decision to allow commercial establishments which employ more than 10 persons to operate 24/7 throughout the year has miffed resident welfare associations (RWAs) across the city. The move is a violation of citizens’ right to sleep and sound health, the RWAs claimed.
The government, taking cognisance of demands for extension of the city’s night life, had modified some provisions of Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961 in January last year to allow such establishments to operate 24/7 for the next three years. While trade bodies and business associations are enthused with the relaxation as the economy is bouncing back following the pandemic, RWAs fear the move will only unleash nuisance on streets at night.
