Turns out Joe Mixon indeed did the Cincinnati Bengals a solid with that re-negotiated contract.
Mixon and the Bengals recently re-did his deal in a move that saves the team some cap space this year. And team president Mike Brown told reporters that he’s happy about how the star running back approached the situation.
“We thought if we had a little more room it would help us with other situations. Joe understood that,” Brown said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “He handled himself well. I like Joe. I think he’s a good player. He has been here and been an important player for a long time and we asked him to step up and help us with the overall situation we have and he did.”
Presumably, Mixon didn’t have much of a choice in the matter because if things got to a certain point, the Bengals could have pointed at the overall miserable running back market to force the issue.
But from the sounds of it, Mixon was more than willing to take a cut if it meant more to go around so that he can finish what he started with the team.
With training camp starting, Mixon’s pay cut feels like the first domino in what could be some high-profile extensions very soon.
