It’s no secret the Cincinnati Bengals want to get Joe Burrow’s upcoming extension done as soon as possible.
And that means soon, given that he’s already eligible to sign an extension after this upcoming season.
Naturally, it’s a conversation that came up during Burrow’s recent meet with the media. There, he kept it simple, saying he hasn’t really thought about it.
“I mean, the market is just exploding,” Burrow said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “It’s crazy the number that these guys are putting up, and I think it’s well deserved. All those guys are playing at the top of their game. They’re being paid accordingly. But I’m not worried about [it]. I like to make jokes about it, but really, I haven’t thought about it much right now.”
Given what we know about Burrow, it’s easy to believe him on that front, too.
Burrow would easily demand to reset the quarterback market when the time comes and he’d be worth it. There’s also zero concern the Bengals would make it happen, too. They did it early with Carson Palmer and would undoubtedly do it again while juggling extensions for the likes of Ja’Marr Chase at a later date.
But it’s also worth wondering if Burrow will even aim that high. Despite his budding superstar status, he’s not going out of his way to get national endorsements and he’s used his platform to do things like helping out a friend’s business.
Burrow also just so happens to have a trip lined up with Jessie Bates, the franchise-tagged star due an extension by July 15. His publicly backing for Bates’ extension now might hint he’s willing to give up a little to make everyone fit under the cap in future years.
That’s a bit of speculation, of course, but either way, it’s easy to buy he’s not really thinking about his next deal right now.
