West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday sought an interaction with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the recent developments in the State including the Rampurhat violence and violence in the Assembly. Nine persons were burnt to death at Bogtui village in Rampurhat following the murder of a local Trinamool Congress leader on March 21. On March 28, the BJP and the TMC MLAs came to blows in the Assembly over the violence
“WB Guv Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has invited Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Bannerjee for interaction during the week at Raj Bhavan to deliberate worsening law and order in the State, particularly in view of alarmingly worrisome developments #Rampurhat Violence & State Legislature,” the Governor tweeted, sharing a letter he has written to the Chief Minister.
“Already cliff hanging governance in the State, from the perspective of Constitution and law, has recently been further strained by horrifying incidents of barbarity at Rampurhat and in the hallowed precincts of the West Bengal Assembly,” the Governor wrote in the letter.
In the communication, Mr. Dhankhar expressed concern over the Chief Minister’s remarks to “hit the streets in protests if the CBI probe is not in tune with your thought process, since the same is not in sync with the position you adorn”. “Please bear in mind the investigation by CBI in the horrific barbarity at Rampurhrat is ordered and monitored by the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta. Any recourse thereof has to be lawful and not on streets,” the Governor wrote in the letter. Ms. Banerjee and other TMC leaders had said “if the CBI at the instance of the BJP there is an effort to indulge in politics of vendetta... then there will be protest and mass agitation”.
The remarks by the Governor triggered strong reaction from the Trinamool Congress leadership who accused him of acting as per the “instructions of the BJP”.
