Liverpool’s hunt for an unprecedented quadruple continues this evening as they travel to Portugal for the first-leg of their quarter-final tie against Benfica.
Jurgen Klopp’s side, winners of this competition in 2019 having been beaten finalists a year earlier, survived a second-leg scare to overcome Inter Milan in the last-16 and will hope to take a big step towards the semi-finals tonight in what is a massive week for the club.
A potential Premier League decider against Manchester City is looming on Sunday but Klopp has warned his side they can ill-afford to underestimate their hosts tonight, despite the Lisbon club sitting third in the Portuguese top-flight, some way off the pace in the title race.
“[They are] one of the most successful teams in Portugal, this year maybe not exactly where they want to be in the table but they went far in the Champions League so it’s a tough opponent,” Klopp said. “I know we know a lot of players, obviously, from Premier League or Bundesliga or wherever so you can say it’s a proper team and we have to be really good, that’s true.”
