Benfica release statement denying Enzo Fernandez interview took place amid Liverpool transfer links

Benfica have released a statement over the future of Enzo Fernandez amid links with Liverpool.

The Reds have been repeatedly linked with a move for the Argentina midfielder, who impressed for his country on their way to winning the World Cup. Fernandez’s performances saw him win the Young Player of the Tournament award in Qatar.

Fernandez is reported to have a release clause worth around €‎120million (£106m), and various reports have stated that Benfica would not let the player leave the club in January until that price is met. The 21-year-old only moved to Benfica from River Plate last summer.

Quotes emerged on Thursday of Benfica president Rui Costa talking to DAZN about Fernandez’s future, with it hinted that a January exit could be possible if the player’s release clause is met. However, Benfica have responded with a statement denying that such an interview took place.

The statement read : “SL Benfica clarifies that at no time did the President of the Club, Rui Costa, utter the words that are being disseminated in Italy by DAZN.

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica reiterates its intention to count on the player Enzo Fernández until the end of the season.”
