Benfica issue statement clarifying exactly how much Liverpool have paid for Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez has had his transfer to Liverpool from Benfica confirmed and the Portuguese club have now clarified the breakdown of the initial £64.2million fee.

Nunez bagged an impressive 34 goals in all competitions this season – including in both legs of their European clash against the Reds at the quarter-final stage, taking his goal tally in the competition to six for the campaign – with Liverpool winning the race to his signature.

The Uruguayan international was always going to be one of Europe's most sought-after strikers this summer after a sensational season in the Primeira Liga and Champions League and had been linked to a series of top European clubs. His move to Anfield will see the club break their record transfer fee of £75million paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018.

The Reds have shelled out an upfront fee of £64.2million (€75m) alongside a further £21.5million (€25m) in easily attainable add-ons. However, the Portuguese giants will not receive the entirety of that fee and will receive just £46.7million from the upfront payment.

Nunez’s old Uruguayan club Penarol have netted £1.94million from the deal while Almeria will enjoy a windfall of £8.95million due to their agreement when selling the striker to Benfica a year ago. Furthermore, the Portuguese club will lose 10 percent for ‘intermediation services’ which amounts to £6.24million.

A statement from the Portuguese club has read: "Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD ("Benfica SAD") confirms, following the statement released on June 13, 2022, that the transfer of the rights of the player Darwin Nunez to Liverpool is confirmed FC, for the amount of €75million.

"It is further explained that Liverpool FC will be entitled to retain the solidarity mechanism for further distribution to the clubs that participated in the player's training.

"Additionally, Benfica SAD will have charges for intermediation services of 10% of the sale value deducted from the solidarity amount and will also have to deliver to UD Almeria the amount corresponding to 20% of the value of the capital gain obtained with this transfer, up to a limit of €10million."

While the Reds have paid £64.2million upfront for the player, there is an additional £21.3million in add-ons. An extra £4.3million (€5m) will be paid after Nunez plays 10 games for his new club and when he hits the 60-game milestone, £8.6million (€10m) will be paid. The remaining £8.6million (€10m) will depend on performance-related objectives, both individual and collective. That takes the total value of the deal up to £85.5million (€100m).
