Benefits of drinking Guinness discussed on Lorraine for St Patrick's Day

Health expert Dr Hilary Jones appeared on Lorraine this morning to talk about the benefits of drinking Irish stout Guinness, on St Patrick's Day.

The medical master had a joke with Scottish host Lorraine Kelly, when they spoke about the country having "a small sherry" when celebrating the anniversary of Irish patron saint St Patrick.

Lorraine introduced the segment by saying: "It's St Patrick's Day today, and some people who are Irish may or may not have a small sherry today, but they are more likely to have one of these."

A crew member then brought out two pints of the dark-coloured stout to the presenters, and Dr Hilary Jones then went on to discuss the benefits of just one pint of the stuff.

The 68-year-old said: "Do you remember that lovely advert? Tall, dark and have-some!

"This is full of calcium, which is good for teeth and bones. There is plenty of iron in there, I used to prescribe this , you know, on the wards.

"Yeah, plenty of iron for supply of oxygen through the body and for your red blood cells.

"And of course, it's also got Vitamin B in it, which is very good for brain function, which is why the Irish are so intelligent, of course.

"It's also good for energy levels, so I will be boosting my energy and drinking to St Patrick today, cheers!"

Lorraine only took a whiff of the drink however, as she said: "I better not though, because one is never enough is it?"

Dr Hilary added: "It's never as good if you're not in Ireland yourself too."

You can watch Lorraine every weekday from 9am onwards on ITV.
