Ben White responds to talk of Arsenal challenging for Premier League title: ‘Why not?’

Ben White sees no reason why Arsenal cannot maintain their current form and challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners sit top of the table after nine games, winning eight of them with the only dropped points coming in a defeat at Old Trafford in which Mikel Arteta’s side were the better team for large periods.

A 3-2 victory over Liverpool at the Emirates on Sunday took Arsenal back above Manchester City, with wins over Jurgen Klopp’s team and Tottenham since the international break only increasing the palpable excitement at the Emirates.

Arteta has remained coy on the suggestion that his side are in a title race, insisting he would not be talking about that, but White was in more buoyant mood when asked if the Gunners were ready to go all the way.

“The way we’re going, we’re doing well,” White told beIN SPORTS. “Game by game - why not?”

He added: “I think this squad is fantastic. I don’t think there’s anyone getting ahead of themselves. You can see that in the training we do during the week.

“It’s game by game, we’re not looking too far ahead.”

Arsenal went ahead inside a minute as Gabriel Martinelli, who was sensational throughout, opened the scoring, before Bukayo Saka restored the lead just before the break after Darwin Nunez had equalised.

Roberto Firmino pegged the Gunners back again, but Saka stepped up to the spot to dispatch his penalty and send Arsenal on their way to a statement win at the Emirates.

Victories, and even positive performances, have been in short supply for Arsenal against Liverpool in past seasons, but White believes this is a changed Arsenal team.

“Playing against Liverpool is always tough,” White said.

“In the recent years we haven’t got the results we wanted. This year is different.”

He added: “I don’t think there’s any fear in our team, we’re all young and hungry to be the best, so that’s what we’re trying to do.”
